Assignment 1

The document contains three questions related to electrical engineering concepts involving 3-phase windings, synchronous generators, and alternators. It requires calculations for factors such as breadth and pitch, induced EMF for different winding configurations, and the number of series turns and conductors per slot for a specified alternator design. The questions involve understanding harmonic effects, slot configurations, and voltage requirements in electrical machines.

Q1: Determine the breadth and pitch factors for a 3-phase winding with two slots

per pole per phase. The coil span is five slot pitches.
If the flux density wave in the air-gap consists of the fundamental and a 24% third
harmonic, Calculate the percentage increase in the rms value of phase voltage due
to the harmonic.
Q2: A 50 Hz, 6-pole synchronous generator has 36 slots. It has a two-layer winding
with full-pich coils of eight turns each. The flux per pole is 0.015 Wb (sinusoidally
distributed). Determine the induced Emf (line-to-line) if the coils are connected to
form (a) 2-phase winding (b) star-connected 3-phase winding.
Q3: Find the number of series turns required for each phase of a 3-phase, 50 Hz,
10-pole alternator with 90 slots. The winding is to be star-connected to give a line
voltage of 11 kV. The flux/pole is 0.16 Wb. Also, determine the number of
conductors per slot.
