Issue Title: Addressing the role of technology in preserving cultural heritage
Peru has a rich cultural heritage, with landmarks such as Machu Picchu and the Qhapaq Ñan
road system that reflect its deep history. However, these sites face threats from climate change,
natural disasters, and human activities. Preserving them is a national priority, and technology has
become an essential tool in these efforts. By using digital innovations, Peru aims to protect its
cultural heritage for future generations while improving accessibility and awareness.
Peru has used technology in multiple ways to document and preserve its cultural heritage. For
example, satellite imagery and 3D mapping have been used to study and protect the Qhapaq Ñan.
Additionally, the National Library of Peru has digitized historical manuscripts, allowing for
long-term preservation and public access. Despite these advancements, illegal excavations and
environmental factors continue to pose significant risks. More technological solutions are needed
to enhance conservation efforts and strengthen existing protections.
Solutions
To improve cultural heritage preservation through technology, Peru proposes the following
initiatives:
1. Expanding Digital Documentation
Peru supports increasing the use of 3D scanning, geospatial mapping, and AI to create
accurate digital records of historical sites. These methods help in restoration and
protection efforts by providing precise models of sites and artifacts. Remote
monitoring systems can also track environmental changes, allowing for quicker
responses to threats such as erosion or illegal activity.
2. Engaging Local Communities
Cultural preservation should involve local and indigenous communities, whose
knowledge is valuable in maintaining historical sites. Peru proposes digital projects
where communities can share oral histories and cultural traditions, ensuring they are
preserved in digital archives. Additionally, virtual reality experiences and online
exhibits can help educate younger generations and encourage public interest in
cultural heritage.
3. Strengthening International Cooperation
To address illegal artifact trading, Peru calls for global collaboration in tracking and
recovering stolen cultural items. A UNESCO-led initiative could establish a digital
database for monitoring artifacts, making it easier to trace their origins. Additionally,
partnerships between museums, universities, and research institutions can improve
digital preservation techniques and promote shared knowledge.
Conclusion
Peru is committed to preserving its cultural heritage through technology and global cooperation.
By strengthening digital documentation, involving local communities, and reinforcing
international protections, we can safeguard cultural sites for future generations. UNESCO and
member states must work together to implement these strategies and ensure that cultural heritage
remains protected in an increasingly digital world.
