Week 2 - Lecture - V1

The document is an introduction to engineering drawing, covering essential topics such as drawing sheets, types of drawings, scales, layout, types of lines, and basic dimensioning. It outlines the classification of engineering drawings, including pictorial and orthographic representations, and details the components of a drawing sheet layout, including title blocks and line types. The learning objectives emphasize the understanding of these fundamental concepts in engineering drawing.

Introduction to

engineering drawing

Lecture by: Abhijit Date

Learning objectives

Will develop an understanding of,

• Drawing sheets and types of drawings

• Scales (plain and diagonal),

• Drawing sheet layout

• Types of lines

• Basic dimensioning
Drawing Sheet
Standard sizes as per ISO
Classification of engineering drawings
Engineering drawing

Pictorial representation Diagrams, charts, graphs

Perspective Orthographic projection

Orthogonal Isometric

Third Angle First Angle

Commonly used in industry,

• Arrangement of assembly drawings

• Layout drawings
• Schematic and diagrammatic drawings
• Detail drawings
• Process drawings
Scales
Engineering drawing scales

Surveying and mapping scales

Indication method
Use the word ‘SCALE’ as prefix, e.g. ‘SCALE 1:100’

If the drawing is not to scale as note ‘NOT TO SCALE’ should be used.

Where one scale predominates, the indication of that scale should be

shown in or near the title block together with ‘OR AS SHOWN’

If there are more than one scale used in the drawing, the scales should
be clearly shown adjacent to the view of views concerned. A notion
‘SCALES AS SHOWN’ should also be indicated in or near title block.

Another example of Title Block

The title block should include:

Title:- title of the drawing

Name:- name of the person who produced the drawing
Checked:- before manufacture, drawings are usually checked
Version:- many drawings are amended, each revision must be noted
Date:- the date the drawing was produced or last amended
Notes:- any note relevant to the drawing
Scale:- the scale of the drawing
Company name:- name of the company
Projection:- the projection system used to create the drawing
Types of lines
Some common types of lines

Continuous thick
Used to represent visible outlines, visible edges

Continuous thin Used to represent projectors, dimension lines,

hatching lines

Dashed/dotted thick
Used to represent hidden lines, hidden edges

Chain thin with dot

Used to represent centre line, axis of solids
Basic dimensioning Projection line

Elements of dimensioning Dimension line
