3
lesson:

Let’s explore subordinating conjunctions in a fun

and creative way through a poem!

“How Words Connect Our Thoughts”

When the sun shines, we laugh and run

But if it rains, we have less fun.

Although it’s cold, we play outside,

Because our joy won’t hide inside.

Since the morning, we’ve learned a lot,

Until it’s late, we won’t stop thought.

Unless we try, we’ll never know,

So that we shine, our skills must grow.”

D. Discussing new concept and practicing new

skill #1

Now, let’s analyze the sentences in our poem and

understand how subordinating conjunctions
connect ideas.

1. When the sun shines, we laugh and run.

The subordinating conjunction “when” shows time

by indicating when the action of laughing and
running happens.

2. But if it rains, we have less fun.

The subordinating conjunction “if” introduces a

condition, meaning the level of fun depends on
whether it rains or not.

3. Although it’s cold, we play outside.

The subordinating conjunction “although” shows

4
contrast, explaining that despite the cold weather,
the action of playing continues.

4. Because our joy won’t hide inside.

The subordinating conjunction “because” explains

the cause of why the joy is expressed outside
rather than being hidden inside.

5. Since the morning, we’ve learned a lot.

The subordinating conjunction “since” indicates

time, marking the starting point of the learning
process.

E. Discussing the new concept and practicing new

skill #2

Subordinating Conjunctions: Definition, Types, and

Usage

A subordinating conjunction is a word or phrase

that connects an independent clause (a complete
sentence) with a dependent clause (an incomplete
sentence that adds information). It shows the
relationship between the two clauses, such as
time, cause, condition, contrast, or purpose.

Example Sentences:

I stayed home because I was sick. (Reason)

We will eat dinner after Dad arrives. (Time)

She will join us if she finishes her work. (Condition)

He continued running although he was tired.

(Contrast)

She studies hard so that she can pass the exam.

(Purpose)

Types of Subordinating Conjunctions

5
A. Time (When Something Happens)

These conjunctions indicate the timing of an action

in relation to another.

Examples: after, before, once, since, until, when,

while, as soon as

Example Sentences:

We will play outside after we finish our homework.

She was reading a book when the phone rang.

They stayed inside until the storm passed.

B. Cause and Effect (Why Something Happens)

These conjunctions explain the reason for an

action or its result.

Examples: because, since, as, so that

Example Sentences:

She stayed home because she was feeling unwell.

I didn’t go out since I had a lot of work to do.

He studied hard so that he could pass the test

C. Condition (If Something Will Happen)

These conjunctions introduce a condition that

must be met.

Examples: if, unless, provided that, in case, as long

as

Example Sentences:

You can join the trip if you get permission from

your parents.

We won’t go to the park unless the weather

improves.

She will be happy as long as she gets good grades.

6
D. Contrast or Opposition (Contradicting Ideas)

These show contrast between two ideas.

Examples: although, even though, whereas, while

Example Sentences:

She kept working although she was tired.

I love spicy food, whereas my brother prefers mild

flavors.

He continued playing even though it was raining.

E. Purpose (Why Something is Done)

These conjunctions explain the goal of an action.

Examples: so that, in order that

Example Sentences:

She studies hard so that she can pass the exam.

I left early in order that I could catch the bus.

Rules for Using Subordinating Conjunctions

A. Position of the Clauses

1. If the dependent clause comes first, use a

comma.

Before I left, I checked my bag.

Although it was raining, they played outside.

2. If the independent clause comes first, no

comma is needed.

I checked my bag before I left.

They played outside although it was raining.

B. Avoiding Sentence Fragments

A dependent clause cannot stand alone.

Incorrect: Because she was tired. (This is

7
incomplete.)

Correct: She went to bed early because she was

tired.

F. Developing mastery

Underline the subordinating conjunction in each

sentence and identify its type (Time, Cause,
Condition, Contrast, or Purpose).

1. Although she was tired, she finished her

homework.

2. We will wait here until the bus arrives.

3. If you study hard, you will pass the exam.

4. He left early so that he could catch the train.

5. Since it was raining, we stayed indoors.
