The Simple Direct Grading marking is the common grading of your student's assessments using
the PDF Annotation Tools. This guide will take you through the complete functionality of the
myModules version of this marking method.
Step 1: On your Dashboard, locate the ‘myModules drop-down menu and click on it.
Step 2: You will be provided with a list of your Modules. Please click on the Module, in which the
Assessment is located. You will then be directed to the selected Module Site.
Step 3: You will now scroll down to the Topic that has the Assessment and click on it.

Step 4: You will now click on the Assessment that you want to mark
It will then direct you to the ‘Grading Summary’ page. This page will provide you with a basic table
of information which includes:

Step 5: You will scroll down to the bottom of your page and click on the ‘Grade’ button.
Please Note: If you click on the ‘Grade’ button it will direct you straight to the first script for you to
mark. If you select the ‘View all submissions’ button it will direct you to the ‘View all submissions’
page where you will be presented with a table of each student and their submission status, etc.

2.1 The Navigation Panel:
a) Navigation back to Course Page: If you click on this link, it will direct you back to
your Course page.
b) Navigation back to Assignment Grading Summary Page: By clicking on this link,
it will direct you back to the Grading summary page of the assessment
c) Navigation back to View all Submissions Page: By clicking on this, it will direct
you to the View all submissions page.

d) Student Information: Here you will be able to view the student’s name and email
address
e) Due Date: This shows the Due date for the assessment

c) Expand/Collapse comments: This expands or collapses all the comment boxes
left on the script

d) Rotate 90° left: You can rotate the script 90° at a time anti-clockwise
e) Rotate 90° right: You can rotate the script 90° at a time clockwise
f) Comments: This allows you to insert a comment box within the script and type out
your comment within that comment box.
Note:
After you have added a comment, by clicking on the option box located in the top-right-
hand corner of the comment box, you will be presented with the following:
i. Add to quicklist: This functionality allows you to add a comment, that you will be using
frequently whilst marking the submission.
ii. Delete Comment: This is the default delete functionality, that is available to you.
Please Note: You can also insert a mark within the comment box, and it will automatically add it
to the total marks a student will receive. It will only auto-total the mark inserted in the comment
box, if there are any other characters/words within the same comment box the system will not
auto-total it.

Please Note: This functionality is only available when the Simple Direct Grading method is being
used. It does not work when the Marking Guide or Rubric Methods are being utilized
g) Comment colour: This allows you to change the colour of the comment box from
a predefined list.

h) Drag: You can use this to click on the script and zoom in or out, as well as move
the script within the grading field.
i) Select: This arrow tool, allows you to click on a comment, line, etc., it will then select
it and allow you to delete the selected item.

p) Stamp: This is the important one for the Simple Direct Grading Method. It has a
few of the ‘Ticks’ which range in weighting from 0.5 marks to -10 marks. There is
also a blank Tick which you can select the weighting for. It also has the reversed
Tick, the Cross, a smiley face, and a sad face.

2.4 The Feedback Tools:
a) Grade out of …: This is where the marks will be auto-populated as you grade the
assessment. The system will auto-calculate the total as well.
Please Note: For the Simple Direct Grading method, you can type in the total mark for the
assessment within the ‘Grade out of …’ field and then click on ‘Save changes. This will then take
it as the mark for the assessment.
b) Marking workflow state: This drop-down, allows you to set the workflow state of
the assessment concerning your marking
You can set the Marking Workflow State to any of the states, however, you will utilize the ones
explained below when marking the assessment.
• You will select the ‘In marking’ option when you are busy marking/ have marked a portion
of the assessment and decide to return to complete the marking
• You will select the ‘Marking completed’ option only once you have completed marking the
entire assessment (this is per student).

c) Current grade in assignment: This will be automatically populated once, you have
‘Save changes’ after marking the assessment.
d) Allocated Marker: This drop-down provides you with the functionality and ability to
route the submission to a marker/secondary lecturer.
Please Note: It is a shortcut drop-down provided when marking a submission. The marking
workflow process has to be enabled for this functionality to be available.
e) Current grade gradebook: This will only be populated once you have saved the
marking for the script.
f) Feedback comments: This is where you can insert/type out your comments whilst
marking the script.

g) Feedback files: If you do not want to type any comments, and already have them
in a Word document you can upload them within this field. You can do this by
dragging and dropping it into the field provided.
Once you have completed marking the script, you can either click on the ‘Save’ button and then
click on the ‘Navigation back to Assignment Grading Summary Page’ link, if you are done marking
and want to exit the grading screen. Or you can click on the ‘Save and show next’ button. This
will save the marked script and automatically switch to the next script in the queue that needs to
be marked.
