Module Overview

This module introduces key aspects of English grammar, covering sentence


structure, parts of speech, tenses, punctuation, and common errors.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, learners will be able to:


1. Identify the main parts of speech.
2. Construct different sentence types.
3. Apply basic grammar rules.

MODULE 1

Lesson 1: Parts of Speech

English grammar consists of different types of words, called parts of speech. The
eight main parts of speech are:

1. Noun - Names a person, place, or thing.


2. Pronoun - Replaces a noun.
3. Verb - Expresses an action.
4. Adjective - Describes a noun.
5. Adverb - Modifies a verb or adjective.
6. Preposition - Shows relation.
7. Conjunction - Connects words.
8. Interjection - Expresses emotion.

Activity: Identify the parts of speech in this sentence:


1. The little boy quickly ran to the park and played happily.

2. She sings beautifully in the choir.

3. The tall man walked slowly down the street.

4. I can't believe how fast you ran!

5. John and Mary went to the market to buy vegetables.

6. Wow! That was an amazing performance!

7. The cat sat on the windowsill, staring at the birds.

8. They worked hard and finished the project on time.

9. We are going to the beach this weekend.

10. The teacher spoke gently to the students.


MODULE 1

Lesson 2: Sentence Structure

A complete sentence has a subject, a verb, and a complete thought. There are
different types of sentences:

1. Simple Sentence - One subject and verb.


2. Compound Sentence - Two independent clauses joined by a conjunction.
3. Complex Sentence - An independent and a dependent clause.

Activity: Rewrite these sentences correctly:


1. she likes ice cream but he prefers cake.
2. running in the park fun.
3. the dog barked loudly at the mailman
4. they went to the store and bought some groceries
5. we will travel to New York next summer

Lesson 3: Verb Tenses

Verbs change based on time (past, present, future). The three main tenses are:
1. Present - She writes a letter.
2. Past - She wrote a letter.
3. Future - She will write a letter.

Activity: Rewrite these sentences with different tenses:


1. I eat breakfast.
2. They go to school.
3. She reads a book.
4. We play soccer every weekend.
5. He writes emails every day.

Lesson 4: Subject-Verb Agreement


Subjects and verbs must agree in number:
1. The boy runs (Singular).
2. The boys run (Plural).

Activity: Choose the correct verb:


1. She (is/are) happy.
2. The dogs (barks/bark) loudly.
3. They (run/runs) every morning.
4. He (eat/eats) breakfast at 7 AM.
5. The teacher (explain/explains) the lesson clearly.

Lesson 5: Punctuation Rules


Proper punctuation improves clarity:
Period (.) ends a sentence.
Comma (,) separates items.
Question mark (?) asks a question.

Exclamation mark (!) - Shows strong emotion or emphasis.


Example: Wow! That was amazing!
Colon (:) - Introduces a list, explanation, or quote.
Example: I need to buy the following items: apples, bananas, and oranges.
Semicolon (;) - Connects two closely related independent clauses or separates
items in a complex list.
Example: I have a meeting tomorrow; I can’t be late.
Quotation marks (" ") - Enclose direct speech, quotes, or titles of short works.
Example: She said, "I’ll be there soon."
Apostrophe (') - Shows possession or forms contractions.
Example: It’s Maria’s book. (Contraction)
That is Sam’s hat. (Possession)
Hyphen (-) - Joins words or parts of words, often in compound adjectives.
Example: She is a well-known artist.
Parentheses (()) - Adds extra information or clarifies a point.
Example: He went to the store (the one on Main Street).
Ellipsis (...) - Indicates a pause, unfinished thought, or omitted words.
Example: She hesitated... then answered the question.

Activity: Add punctuation:


1. Where are you going
2. I like apples oranges and bananas
3. She said I will be back soon
4. Can you believe it
5. He went to the store the one on Elm Street

Lesson 6: Common Sentence Errors


Avoid mistakes like run-on sentences and fragments:
1. Run-on: I love pizza it is tasty.
2. Fragment: Because it was raining.

Activity: Fix these errors:


1. She runs fast he walks slowly.
2. Since I woke up early.
3. I can't wait for the weekend it will be so much fun.
4. He enjoys playing soccer but he doesn’t like watching it.
5. After the meeting we went to lunch.

Lesson 7: Writing Effective Sentences


Write clear, concise sentences:
1. Use strong verbs.
2. Avoid redundancy.
3. Keep sentences focused.

Activity: Rewrite these for clarity:


1. She is a person who likes reading books.
2. The reason why he left was because he was tired.
3. The reason why I am late is because of traffic.
4. She is the one who is responsible for organizing the event.
5. I want to go to the store because I need to buy some food.
