(An Autonomous Institute affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi)

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS
MULTIVARIATE CALCULUS AND LINEAR ALGEBRA
SEMESTER - I
Tutorial – 6

1. Solve the following system of linear equations using Gauss Seidel method (Carry out 3
iterations):
a. 12𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 31; 2𝑥 + 8𝑦 − 𝑧 = 24; 3𝑥 + 4𝑦 + 10𝑧 = 58
b. 5𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 𝑧 = 12; 𝑥 + 4𝑦 + 2𝑧 = 15; 𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 5𝑧 = 20
2. Solve the following system of linear equations using Gauss elimination method:
a. 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 − 𝑧 = 5; 4𝑥 + 4𝑦 − 3𝑧 = 3; 2𝑥 − 3𝑦 + 2𝑧 = 2
b. 5𝑥 − 9𝑦 − 2𝑧 + 4𝑤 = 7; 3𝑥 + 𝑦 + 4𝑧 + 11𝑤 = 2; 10𝑥 − 7𝑦 + 3𝑧 + 5𝑤 = 6;
−6𝑥 + 8𝑦 − 𝑧 − 4𝑤 = 5

Tutorial – 7
1. Solve the following system of linear equations using Gauss Jordan method:
a. 2𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 10; 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 18; 𝑥 + 4𝑦 + 9𝑧 = 16
b. 2𝑥1 + 𝑥2 + 3𝑥3 = 1; 4𝑥1 + 4𝑥2 + 7𝑥3 = 1; 2𝑥1 + 5𝑥2 + 9𝑥3 = 3
2. Solve the following system of linear equations using LU decomposition method:
a. 7𝑥1 − 2𝑥2 + 𝑥3 = 12; 14𝑥1 − 7𝑥2 − 3𝑥3 = 17; −7𝑥1 + 11𝑥2 + 18𝑥3 = 5
3. Investigate the values of 𝜆 and 𝜇 for which the given system has
i. No solution
ii. Unique solution
iii. Infinitely many solutions
a. 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 5𝑧 = 9; 7𝑥 + 3𝑦 − 2𝑧 = 8; 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 𝜆𝑧 = 𝜇
b. 𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 6; 𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 5𝑧 = 9; 2𝑥 + 5𝑦 + 𝜆𝑧 = 𝜇
