Course Objectives:
The course is intended to impart knowledge about the diodes, and transistors in electronic
circuits.
Module I 22 Hours

Formation of energy bands, Fermi level, energy- band models, direct and indirect band gap,
electrons and holes, doping, intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors, elemental and compound
semiconductor, generation, recombination and injection of carriers, Drift and Diffusion of
carriers, basic governing equations in semiconductors.
PN Junctions, Formation of Junction, Physical operation of diode, Contact potential and
Space Charge phenomena, I - V Characteristics,
Special diodes- Zener diode Tunnel diode, LED, Varactor diode and Photo Diode. I - V
Characteristics
DC Analysis – Small Signals and Large signal models of PN junction diode and AC
equivalent circuit. Problems using diode circuits.

Module II 23 Hours
Bipolar Junction Transistor: Device structure and physical operation, I-V characteristics. Field
Effect Transistor JFET-MOSFET- Device Structure and Mode of operation, I- V
Characteristics, Threshold Voltage.
DC Analysis of BJT Circuits, CB, CE and CC Configuration.
Field Effect Transistor (FET): DC Analysis of MOSFET Circuits, MOSFET CS, CG and Source
Follower Circuits- Problems
