Math 1510-10 Exam 3 Review, Summer 2023 Name __________________________________

This is an open book/notes exam, but do keep in mind such materials will not be allowed on the
actual exam. Due at the beginning of class on Thursday. 75 Points Total.

1. (10 pts) On the graph below, draw a function 𝑓 that meets all of the following criteria. For full credit, you must label
all max/min and inflection points with ordered pairs (𝒙, 𝒚) and specify what kind of point you are labeling. For
example, if the point (−2, −5) was a local min, you would write “local min: (−2, −5)” next to this point on your graph.
Suggestion: Sketch this function on scratch paper before drawing the graph that you will turn in.

a. Absolute max value: 5 Absolute minimum value: −2

b. 𝑥-intercepts: 4, 8 𝑦-intercept: 3

c. 𝑓(10) = 2

d. 𝑓 ′ (𝑥) > 0 for 𝑥 in (0,2) ∪ (6,10) 𝑓 ′ (𝑥) < 0 for 𝑥 in (2,6)

e. 𝑓 ′′ (𝑥) > 0 for 𝑥 in (4,8) 𝑓 ′′ (𝑥) < 0 for 𝑥 in (0,4) ∪ (8,10)

2. (15 pts) An above ground swimming pool will be constructed in the shape of a cylinder with an open top. Material for
the circular base costs $2 per square foot. Material for the sides costs $3 per square foot. What is the cost of the least
expensive pool that can be built with a volume of 1600 cubic feet? Round your answer to the nearest dollar. You may
look up formulas for volume/surface area as needed.
3. (8 pts) Approximate the definite integral below using 𝑛 = 5 rectangles and midpoints. Show all steps, including the
values of 𝑥 that you put into the function. Round your answer to 3 decimal places.
18
∫ 𝑒 √𝑥 𝑑𝑥
3
4. Consider the following definite integral:
7
∫ (𝑥 2 − 10𝑥 + 25) 𝑑𝑥
5

a. (2 pts) Give a formula for Δ𝑥 if the interval is divided into 𝑛 rectangles.

b. (2 pts) Find a formula for 𝑥𝑖 , the right endpoint of the 𝑖th rectangle.

c. (8 pts) Express the definite integral as an infinite (Riemann) sum. Using the limit definition of an integral, find its
value. You may look up any summation formulas that you need, but show all steps. You will not receive credit for using
the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus or a geometric argument.
5. Let the velocity at time 𝑡 of a particle moving in a straight line be given by the function 𝑣(𝑡) = 12 − 6√𝑡.

a. (4 pts) Find the net displacement of the particle during the time period from 𝑡 = 0 to 𝑡 = 16. Leave your answer in
exact form (no decimals).

b. (6 pts) Find the total distance traveled by the particle during the time period from 𝑡 = 0 to 𝑡 = 16. Leave your
answer in exact form (no decimals).
6. (4 pts each) Suppose 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥) are continuous, as are their derivatives. It is known that 𝑓 is even, 𝑔 is odd, and
7 12 12
𝑔(0) = −12, 𝑔(7) = 12, ∫ 𝑓(𝑥)𝑑𝑥 = −6, ∫ 𝑓(𝑥)𝑑𝑥 = −3, ∫ 𝑔(𝑥)𝑑𝑥 = 10
0 7 7

Find the following values, if possible. If there’s not enough information given, write “Impossible to Determine.” Show
your steps/reasoning for full credit!
7 12
a. ∫ |𝑓(𝑥)| 𝑑𝑥 b. ∫ (3𝑓(𝑥) + 2𝑔(𝑥)) 𝑑𝑥
0 7

7 7
c. ∫ 𝑔(𝑥)𝑑𝑥 d. ∫ 𝑔′ (𝑥)𝑑𝑥
−12 0

7
e. ∫ 𝑓(𝑔(𝑥)) ∙ 𝑔′ (𝑥) 𝑑𝑥
0
