Mary in the
Gospel
• The name "Mary" is derived from the Hebrew
term "Miriam," or Aramaic "Mariam" and is
translated "Maria" in Greek or Latin. It is a
common name in the first-century Israel, and
is the most frequently used woman's name in
the New Testament.
The 4
Marian
Dogmas
What are dogmas?
• A dogma proposes truths contained in
Divine Revelation or having a necessary
connection with it.
• These truths are immediately or mediately
grounded in Scripture.
• refer to doctrines approved by the Church
about Mary, we are able to know more
about her role in the grand salvific plan
WHAT ARE THE 4
MARIAN
DOGMAS?
1. Immaculate
Conception
2. Perpetual Virginity
3. Divine Motherhood
3. 4. Assumption
THE
IMMACULATE
CONCEPTION
qThis marian dogma was
proclaimed as an independent
dogma by Pope Pius IX in his
Apostolic Constitution
“Ineffabilis Deus” (December 8,
1854).
THE
IMMACULATE
CONCEPTION
• The Immaculate Conception states
that from the first moment of
conception in the womb of her
mother, Mary was graced and thus
preserved from all stain of
original sin.
THE
IMMACULATE
CONCEPTION
• She was "filled with grace" that
is, made holy by God's
presence. This privilege was
given to her in view of the
merits of Christ Jesus the
Savior of the human race.
What is the
significance of
Immaculate
Conception?
PERPETUAL
VIRGINITY
qThe expression perpetual virginity, ever-
virgin, or simply "Mary the Virgin" refers
primarily to the conception and birth
of Jesus.
PERPETUAL
VIRGINITY
qJesus was conceived “by the
Holy Spirit without human
seed”. The Fathers of the Church
see in virginal conception (virgin
birth) the sign that it truly was the
Son of God who came in a
humanity like our own.
DIVINE
MOTHERHOOD
qVarious names are used to describe Mary's
role as mother of Jesus. She is called
"Mother of God" which translates the more
accurately stated "Theotokos" or the
bearer of God.
DIVINE
MOTHERHOOD
qMary’s divine motherhood was proclaimed
at the Council of Ephesus in 431
qIn the Gospels “the mother of Jesus,”
Mary is acclaimed by Elizabeth, at the
prompting of the Spirit and even before the
birth of her son, as “the mother of my
Lord.”
What is the
difference between
ACENSION and
ASSUMPTION?
Jesus Christ, Son of God
and Risen Lord, ascended
into heaven, a sign of
divine power. Mary, on the
contrary, was elevated or
assumed into heaven by
the power and grace of
God.
ASSUMPTION OF
MARY
qThe dogmas states that
"Mary, Immaculate Mother of
God ever Virgin, after
finishing the course of her
life on earth, was taken up in
body and soul to heavenly
glory."
ASSUMPTION
OF MARY
qThe Assumption tells us
that this association
continues in heaven.
q Mary is indissolubly
linked to her Son on earth
and in heaven.
ASSUMPTION OF
MARY
qThis marian dogma was proclaimed
by Pope Pius XII on November 1,
1950 on his Encyclical
Munificentissumus Deus.
qThe dogma state that “Mary,
Immaculate Mother of God ever
Virgin, after finishing the course
of her life on earth, was taken up
in body andd soul to heavenly
glory.”
• We, as Christians give special respect
given for Mary which is called
veneration. The Spanish phrase
Pueblo de amante de Maria which
literally means “People in love with
Mary” is the fitting phrase that defines
the Filipino devotion for the Mother of
God.
THE
APPARITION
OF MARY
God entrusts His message
to Mary, who in turn
entrusts this same message
to the visionary who passes
it on to a multitude of
people, mostly pilgrims.
Many seek out Marian apparitions in the
hope of learning new revelations. The
Church states that Marian Apparitions
happen to improve or complete Christ's
definitive Revelation, to help the faithful to
live more fully as Christians. If one desires
to pursue Marian Apparitions for the
purpose of spiritual growth, he/she should
read material related to apparitions that
were studied and approved by the Catholic
Church, these being given the status of
"worthy of belief."
SYNTHESIS
• Marian Devotion are external pious practices
directed to the person of Mary, mother of
Jesus. We have seen her great role in God’s
plan of salvation and so we see her as a
powerful intercessor who would continuously
lead us closer to His Son Jesus. As such,
many people have given her different titles as
they turn to her and seek for her help in
prayer.
