Computer Hardware and Peripheral Parts
Every electronic device has its major and minor parts.
It has its internal and external extensions to perform its task
productively and maintain its performance well particularly the
computer.

PC Hardware Parts
-these are the internal parts of a computer located within
the system unit or the CPU’s housing/casing. It consists of the
different parts, the major parts and the system board parts.

Major Parts
1. CPU casing/housing—it is the main container that
handles all computer parts in place.

2. Power Supply—Installed in the back corner of the

PC case, next to the motherboard. It converts 120vac
(standard house power) into DC voltages that are used by oth-
er components in the PC.

3
3. System Drives—usually these are the Read-Only-Memory or
the permanent secondary data storages of the computer and
commonly are the following:
a. Hard Disk Drive (HDD) - is a magnetic storage device
that is installed inside the computer. The hard drive is used as
permanent storage for data. In a Windows computer, the hard
drive is usually configured as the C: drive and contains the oper-
ating system and applications.

b. Optical Drive—is a storage device that uses lasers to

read data on the optical media. There are three types of optical
drives: Compact Disc (CD), Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) and Blu-
ray Disc (BD).

c. Universal Serial Bus (USB) Drives—this is a serial USB

port on a system board where data are also permanently store
on a disk called flash drive.

47
4. Backplate— a chrome stainless metal at the back of the system
unit used to protect the ports of the motherboard.

5. Motherboard / System board / Main board—The main circuit

board of a computer. It contains all the circuits and components
that run the computer.

Motherboard/System board/Main board Parts

a. CPU/Microprocessor - is the main “brain” or “heart” of a

computer system. It performs all of the instructions and calcula-
tions that are needed and manages the flow of information
through a computer.

6
b. Random Access Memory (RAM) - also known as Prima-
ry storage memory which is the computer's working storage space
that holds data, instructions for processing and processed data
(information) waiting to be sent to secondary storage.
- is volatile, meaning it holds data only when the power is
on. When the power is off, RAM's contents are lost.

c. Expansion Bus—is a data pathway between several

hardware components inside or outside a computer. It does not
only connect the parts of the CPU to each other, but also links the
CPU with other important hardware.

d. Adapters/Card slot—Printed-circuit boards (also called

interface cards) that enable the computer to use a peripheral de-
vice for which it does not have the necessary connections or cir-
cuit boards.

e. Mother/System/Main board ports—are group of incom-

ing and outgoing channels where data & information is transmitted
to and from by the end user’s manipulation.

59
Motherboard System Ports

1. RJ-45 (Registered Jack 45) LAN port : This port allows con-
nection to a Local Area Network (LAN) through a network hub
using a RJ-45 cable.
2. Analog Audio port :This port connects a tape, CD, DVD player
or other audio sources. Indicates for Line-In, Speaker & Mic.
3. VGA Port (Video Graphics Array) :VGA cables carry an analog
signal as opposed to a digital signal (ones and zeroes). Using
higher frequencies, it's possible to reach a relatively high range
of video resolutions. However, video quality directly responds to
cable quality, and doubly so on higher resolutions. Due to this,
the quality of a VGA image can variate notable across different
makes of cables.
4. USB (Universal Serial Bus) 2.0 Ports: There are usually a cou-
ple of these ports located on each motherboard used for con-
necting pen drives and external hard drives, like Ipods or Mp3
players.
5. PS/2 Keyboard Port (purple) :This port is for a PS/2 keyboard.
6. PS/2 mouse port (green) :This port is for a PS/2 mouse.
7. 1394a Port : this port is used to connect to any firewire device.
FireWire has largely been supplanted by USB. Some profession-
al audio hardware still uses FireWire, though; you may also oc-
casionally find higher-speed IEEE 1394b headers, but they are
even rarer.
8. Optical S/PDIF: Used for sound connections to home audio re-
ceivers or powered PC speakers with optical connections.

5
Motherboard System Ports

8. eSATA port (External Serial Advanced Technology Attach-

ment): It is an external interface for SATA technologies. It competes
with FireWire 400 and universal serial bus (USB) 2.0 to provide fast
data transfer speeds for external storage devices.

9. HDMI Connector( High-Definition Multimedia Interface): HDMI

is a digital interface for transmitting audio and video data in a single
cable. It is supported by most HDTVs and related components, such
as DVD and Blu-ray players, cable boxes, and video game systems.

10. DVI (Digital Visual Interface) connector : It is used to send

digital information from a computer to a digital display, such as a
flat-panel LCD monitor.
11. North Bridge : The northbridge typically handles communica-
tions among the CPU, in some cases RAM, and PCI Express (or
AGP) video cards, and the southbridge. Northbridge is directly
connected to AGP video, thus providing higher transfer rates.
12. South Bridge : The southbridge is one of the two chips in the
core logic chipset on a personal computer (PC) motherboard, the
other being the northbridge. The southbridge typically imple-
ments the slower capabilities of the motherboard in a north-
bridge/southbridge chipset computer architecture. A southbridge
chipset handles all of a computer's I/O functions, such as USB,
audio, serial, the system BIOS, the ISA bus, the interrupt control-
ler and the IDE channels.

5
11
PC Peripheral Parts
- sometimes called auxiliary device, is any connected
device, internal or external, that provides a computer with addi-
tional functionality.

Input/ Output (I/O) Devices— composed of devices that accept

INPUT data from a user then will process by the computer to pro-
duce an OUTPUT information.
Input Devices— composed of a device that accepts data and
instructions from the user or from another computer system.

Two(2) Types of Input Device

1. Keyboard Entry – Data is inputted to the computer
through a keyboard.
*Keyboard—The first input device developed for the PC.
Data is transferred to the PC over a short cable with a circular 6-
pin Mini-din connector that plugs into the back of the mother-
board.

7
2. Direct Entry – A form of input that does not require
data to be keyed by someone sitting at a keyboard. Direct-entry
devices create machine-readable data on paper, or magnetic
media, or feed it directly into the computer’s CPU.

Three (3) Classification of Direct Entry Devices

a.) Pointing Devices - an input device used to move the

pointer (cursor) on screen.

· Mouse—The most common 'pointing device'

used in PCs. Every mouse has two buttons and
most have one or two scroll wheels.
· Touch screen—a display screen that is sensitive
to the touch of a finger or stylus. Used in myriad
applications, including ATM machines, retail
point-of-sale terminals, car navigation and indus-
trial controls. The touch screen became wildly
popular for smart phones and tablets.

· Light Pen—a light-sensitive stylus wired to a vid-

eo terminal used to draw pictures or select menu
options. The user brings the pen to the desired
point on screen and presses the pen button to
make contact.

· Digitizer Tablet—a graphics drawing tablet used

for sketching new images or tracing old ones.
Also called a "graphics tablet," the user contacts
the surface of the device with a wired or wireless
pen or puck. Often mistakenly called a mouse,
the puck is officially the "tablet cursor."

8
13
b. Scanning Devices– a device that can read text or il-
lustrations printed on paper and translate the information into a
form the computer can use.

Scanner Barcode

Card Swiper QR code

Reader

c. Audio Input Devices - are also known as speech or

voice recognition systems that allow a user to send audio sig-
nals to a computer for processing, recording, or carrying out
commands. Audio input devices such as microphones allow
users to speak to the computer in order to record a voice mes-
sage or navigate software.

Headset PC Mic

9
Output Devices—are any piece of computer hardware that dis-
plays results after the computer has processed the input data
that has been entered.

1. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) monitor—is a computer display

used to show clear images, motion pictures as movies I a flat
panel.

2. Multimedia Projector—is an optical device that projects an

image (or moving images) onto a surface, commonly
a projection screen.

3. Audio speaker / Headset—a device used when connected to

computer’s audio port will initiate sounds and music.

4. Printers— are peripheral devices which makes a persistent

representation of graphics or text, usually on paper as a hard
copy.
