BIOMATH

The document provides various scientific data regarding bacteria, including their size, age, and population in the human body. It also discusses calculations related to bacterial growth and infection spread, highlighting prevention methods for bacterial diseases like cholera. Key figures include the size of bacteria (0.2 to 8 μm), their age (3.8·10^9 years), and the number of bacteria in the human body (3.7·10^10).

ANALYZE THE INFORMATION

 What is the size of a bActerium? Express the result in scientific notation.

0,2 μm (micron) in diameter (2·10^6) and 2-8 μm (micron) in length
(2·10^6-6·10^6).
 What is the age of the bacteria? Express the result as a power of ten.
3,8·10^9 years old.
 - How many bacteria are there in the human body? Express the result in
scientific notation.
3,7·10^10 bacterias.
 You want to calculate the number of bacteria in a sample of fresh water
that is placed in a prism-shaped container whose base is an equilateral
triangle with sides of 2 cm and its height is 2 cm .

V= Ab · Hc V= 1,732050808 · 2

3,4641 x

x=3,4641 ⋅ 1⋅1061x=3,4641 · 1·1061

;
x=3.464.100 x=3.464.100 bacterias

Note: Remember the equivalence between the units of capacity and volume.

 A person is surrounded by an average of two people whom he infects

with a bacterium in one day, these two people infect two others, and
these two others, and so on for 10 days. How many people will have
been infected?
Look at the diagram and complete the following table:

1º 1 20 = 1
2º 2 21 = 2
3º 4 22 = 4
4º 8 2^3=8
5º 16 2^44=16
6° 32 2^5=32
7° 64 2^6=64
8° 128 2^7=128
9° 256 2^8=256
10° 512 2^9=512
11° 1024 2^10=1024

The number of people infected will be 1024.

 If we start from a population of 4. 10 3 bacteria, how many will we
have after 1 day?

 · If we start from a population of 4. 10 3 bacteria, how many will we have

after 1 day?

In 24h/1 day we have 4·103·312

·
 In a blood draw, 10 ml of blood is taken. What would be the number of
red blood cells in the sample? Express the result as a number of a whole
number and a power of 10.

A drop of blood------- 5.000.000 red blood cells

10 mL--------------------- X red blood cells

X= 5.000.000 · 10/1 = 50.000.000 red blood cells

Scientific notation 5·107

·
 A person is infected by a population of pathogenic bacteria that grows
with rate proportional to the square root of what he has times time in
seconds. Suppose he has 5000 bacteria today. How many bacteria will
he have in 1 month if he is not treated? Express the result in scientific
notation.

1 day ------------- 5000 bacterias

30 days--------- X bacterias 30·5000/1= 150000  15·104

 · Do you know of any disease caused by a bacterial infection other than
tuberculosis?

Yes. For example Cholera is another bacterial infection.

 ·How could this disease be prevented? How could contagion be

avoided?

PREVENTIONS

·Wash your hands often with soap

·Avoiding street food

·Do not eat raw or half-cooked meat

·Drink treated purified water

·Maintaining good sanitation

HOW WE CAN AVOID THE CONTAGION?

·Stay in areas with assured drinking water supply and in places with
desirable hygienic conditions.

·Drink only bottled mineral water, opened by oneself.

·Avoid eating raw fruits and vegetables, especially when visiting areas
without drinking water supplies.

·Avoid restaurants where it is evident that the usual hygiene

recommendations are not followed in the handling, preparation and
conservation of food.

·When returning to the country of origin, perishable food should not be taken
with it, given the possibility that it is contaminated.
