The Highway Addressable Remote Transducer Protocol -HART

• HART is an open protocol, developed in the mid-1980s by Fisher-Rosemount.

• HART is the global standard for sending and receiving digital information across analog
wires between smart devices and control or monitoring system.
• More than 30 million devices worldwide, accounting approximately for 85% of all devices around
the world.
• 1300+ registered devices in 24 categories manufactured by 300+ members.

• HART is now managed by the FieldComm Group (FCG), of which Endress+Hauser is a

member. The FCG also oversees Foundation Fieldbus, as part of a merger of the two
associations as of January 1st 2015.

What is Layer 1 ? (Physical Layer)

• 4 – 20mA analog signal

• HART data superimposed on 4-20mA signal with Digital Frequency Shift Keying (FSK)
(Bell 202 telephone communication standard)
Layer 7
Application layer Commands and data formats
Universal, common practice, device-specific
• Transmission speed 1.2 kbit/sec

Physical Layer / HART Wiring

• There is no “HART” cable quality classification from the HART Foundation.

• Typical cable characteristics:
• Individually shielded twisted pair cable
• HART spec. indicates max 2700m. (Point to point)
But this is not common practice. It is less.

Slide 9 © Endress+Hauser

What is Layer 2 ? (Data Link Layer)

• Master / Slave Mode

• Up to two masters (primary / secondary),

e.g. a controller and a hand-held device.
Layer 7
-> Timing rules define when each master is Application layer Commands and data formats
allowed to initiate communication Universal, common practice, device-specific

(implied token passing)

Layers 3-6
Not in use

• Only one secondary master allowed

What is Layer 3 ? (Application Layer)

• The communication of the HART controller are based on so called HART commandos
which are defined in the application layer.
• With help of predefined commands, a controller sends tasks to a field device.
• The device response right after with the requested data.

Layer 7
• 5 major classes of commands exist: Application layer Commands and data formats
Universal, common practice, device-specific

Universal command

• There is no need to have a specific driver implemented in the host system to

read additional PVs (process values).
• E.g. HART command 3 (up to 4 additional PVs. will be read from the device)

SFG250 Introduction

• If you need to parameterize and monitor your HART field

devices via Ethernet, SFG250 is the solution.

• SFG250 modular nature allows flexibility for different

situations and hence is the "universal" solution.

• The system consists of one head module and one or several

expansion modules. Up to five expansion modules can be
connected to one head module.

• All expansion modules are powered by the head station.

HART over PROFIBUS

• The HART over PROFIBUS solution allows access to all HART devices connected
to PROFIBUS via Remote I/O with HART functionality from one central point.

• Configuration is done directly with FieldCare.

Slide 29 © Endress+Hauser
HART - unlock existing potentials

HART over PROFIBUS

• There are many possibilities to connect a acyclic tool such as FieldCare to PROFIBUS.
• Gateways Ethernet to PROFIBUS are used, such as the Endress+Hauser Fieldgate SFG 500.
