TUTORIAL # 4

1. A vibrator of frequency 10 Hz produces waves with crest 6.0 mm apart. Determine the:
i) period of the wave.
ii) speed of the wave.

2. i) HOT 102 FM radio broadcast on a wavelength of 1.50 km. What is its frequency?
ii) What are the wavelengths of a television station which transmits vision on 500MHz and
sound on 505MHz?
iii) What is the frequency of yellow light of wavelength 0.65µm?

3. A beam of monochromatic light of wavelength 6.0 × 10 -7m in air passes into glass of
refractive index 1.5. If the speed of light in air is 3.0 × 10 8 m/s.
Calculate the:
i) speed of the light in the glass.
ii) frequency of the light.
iii) wavelength of the light in glass.

4. The progressive wave equation is given as:

y (x, t) = 5.0 sin (1.6x + 12.6t)

where x and y are in centimetres (cm) and time in second (s). Determine the:
i) amplitude of the wave.
ii) angular frequency of the wave.
iii) frequency of the wave.
iv) periodic time.
v) wave number of the wave..
vi) wavelength of the wave.
vii) speed of the wave.
viii) displacement of the wave at t = 4 s and x = 20 cm.

5. A travelling wave is represented by the equation

y (x, t) = 3.0 sin 2π (10t - 0.20x)
where x and y are in centimetres (cm) and time is in seconds. Calculate, for this wave:
i) the amplitude
ii) the frequency
iii) the wavelength
iv) the speed.
v) the velocity
vi) the displacement of the wave at t= 0.5 s and x = 1 m.

6. Write the equation for a plane sinusoidal wave travelling in the + x direction which has the
following characteristics: amplitude = 0.30 m, wavelength = 0.50 m and frequency = 20 Hz.

7. In a physics lab, Ray Zuvlite arranges two mirrors with a right angle orientation as shown in
Figure 1. Ray then directs a laser line at one of the mirrors. The light reflects off both mirrors
as shown. If angle A is 38°, then what is the angle measure of angles B, C, and D and E?

8. a) A light ray approaches a mirror at an angle of 22° with the mirror surface. What is the angle
of reflection of this light ray?

b) A light ray approaches a mirror at an angle of incidence of 25°. What is the angle of reflection?

9. A laser beam strikes a vertical surface at an angle of incidence of 48 o . The reflected beam can
be seen as a spot on a horizontal surface. The spot is 10 meters away from the point of
incidence on the vertical surface. What is the horizontal distance from the spot to the vertical
surface? ( 6.7 m)

10. Light of wavelength l0= 865 nm in a vacuum enters the end of an optical fibre from air at an
angle of 25o with respect to the normal. Its wavelength inside the fibre is 580 nm.
Calculate the:

i) index of refraction of the fibre.

ii) angle between the light ray and the normal inside the fibre.
iii) angle between the light ray and the horizontal surface when the light reaches the upper
boundary.

11. A ray of light travelling from air into glass has an angle of incidence of 360 and an angle
of refraction of 250. Calculate the:

i) refractive index of glass.

ii) critical angle of glass.

of 280. Calculate the:

i) angle of refraction.
ii) critical angle.

13. A stepped index optical fibre has a central core of refractive index 1.50, and a cladding of
refractive index 1.45 as shown in Figure 2 below. A single fine beam of monochromatic light
enters the core at an incident angle of 30o.

i) Calculate the angle of refraction of the light ray as it passes into the fibre. (19.5o)
ii) Calculate the critical angle between the core and the cladding. (750)
iii) Explain whether or not the light will continue to go down the core.
