16-Introduction To Finite Element Method-04!02!2025
The document discusses the role of engineers in modeling physical phenomena through mathematical models, which are solved using numerical methods like numerical simulation. It introduces the Finite Element Method (FEM) as a numerical technique for approximating solutions to boundary value problems in partial differential equations by dividing complex problems into smaller elements. The accuracy of FEM can be enhanced by increasing the number of elements and nodes used in the approximation.

Introduction
• Engineers model physical phenomena.
• Analytical descriptions of physical phenomena and processes
are called mathematical models. – Developed using assumptions on the process. – Often characterized by differential and/or integral equations.
• Numerical methods are typically used to solve engineering
mathematical models – referred to as numerical simulation.
What is Finite Element Method?
• It is a numerical technique for finding approximate solutions to boundary value problems for partial differential equations.
• In simple terms, FEM is a method for dividing up a very
complication problem into small elements that can be solved in relation to each other.
• Useful for problems with complicated geometries, loadings, and
material behaviour where analytical solutions cannot be obtained. Finite element method (FEM) is a numerical procedure for solving mathematical models numerically.
• FEM uses discretization (nodes and elements)
to model the engineering system, i.e., subdivide the problem system into small components or pieces called elements and the elements are comprised of nodes.
• Approximations are introduced over each
element to represent the behavior of the unknown variables.
• Different types of elements are available.
• Accuracy of the finite element approximation is
improved by using more elements to approximate the engineering system and/or elements that involve more nodes to define the unknown function(s) variation over the element. *The notes are a summary from “Fundamentals of Finite Element Analysis” by David V. Hutton
