In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:
This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being
an active learner.
This self-learning module has the following parts and corresponding icons:
Posttest - This measures how much you have learned from the
entire self-learning module.

A. ∠G C. ∠A
triangle ΔGAS?
B. 𝐴̅̅𝐺̅̅ D. ∠S
∠B?
5. Using the same triangle in Item No. 4, what is the measure of
A. 40.368° C. 32.051°
B. 37.304° D. 49.632°

LESSON
Calculators are very useful in solving trigonometric problems. Before solving right
triangles, let us practice the use of scientific calculators.
Trigonometric ratios for any given angle can be determined using scientific
calculators. Also, this can be used to determine an angle given the value of its
trigonometric ratio. Here are the steps to follow:
After pressing your calculator, you will get tan 38° = 0.781, correct to
three decimal places.
The value, 65.102°, is in decimal form. You may also convert this
value into degrees/minutes/seconds form. (See No. 3)
Note: When the seconds part of the angle measure is 30 or more (e.g.
24°16’43.01’’), you can round it up to the next minute. Therefore,
24°16’43.01’’ = 24°17’ in the nearest minute.
Now, let us apply this skill in solving right triangles given the length of its
hypotenuse and the length of one leg.
EXAMPLE.
1. Find ∠B.
From the given, b is opposite to ∠B and e is the hypotenuse. To solve ∠B, use
𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
SOH (sine-opposite-hypotenuse).
sin 𝐵 =
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
sin 𝐵 = 𝑏
𝑒 (To find ∠B, use your scientific calculator.)
8
sin 𝐵 =
15
B = 32.231° = 𝟑𝟐°𝟏𝟒′ (in the nearest minute)
2. Find ∠T.
From the given, b is adjacent to ∠T and e is the hypotenuse. To solve ∠T,
𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
use CAH (cosine-adjacent-hypotenuse)
cos 𝑇 =
ℎ𝑦𝑝𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑠𝑒
𝑏
cos T =
(To find ∠T, use your scientific calculator.)
𝑒
8
cos T =
15
T = 57.769° 𝟓𝟕°𝟒𝟔′ (in the minute form)
3. Find t.
𝑡2 + 𝑏2 = 𝑒2
Using the Pythagorean Theorem,
𝑡2 + 82 = 152
𝑡2 + 64 = 225
𝑡2 = 225 − 64
𝑡2 = 161
𝑡 = √161
𝒕 = 𝟏𝟐. 𝟔𝟗
