CHAPTER 1: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In this 2-week internship program, we visited a village K.kotturu at tekkali . During our stay, we
interacted with many villagers who were mostly unaware of the causes and consequences of pollution. We
conducted surveys and gathered extensive information from the villagers regarding their understanding
and practices related to pollution.

Our survey aimed to assess the level of awareness about pollution in these rural communities. We asked
questions to the villagers and collected their responses to evaluate their knowledge and attitudestowards
pollution. The data we gathered has been rated and analyzed to understand the current state ofpollution
awareness in rural India.

In addition to collecting information, we also educated the villagers on the impacts of pollution and ways
to mitigate it. We conducted awareness sessions to inform them about how pollution affects health and the
environment. Furthermore, we provided practical training on how to reduce pollution through simple,
everyday practices. Our goal was to empower the rural public with the knowledge andtools to create a
cleaner, healthier environment for themselves and future generations.

CHAPTER 2: OVERVIEW OF THE COMMUNITY
Location and Context
K. Kotturu is a rural village in the Tekkali mandal of Srikakulam district, located at 18.650356° latitude and
84.310026° longitude. The village primarily relies on agriculture and faces significantpollution challenges.

Pollution Sources

 Agricultural Practices:Extensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and crop

burning contribute to soil, water, and air pollution.

 Waste Management: Improper disposal of household waste, including plastic, leads to

landpollution, with a lack of waste segregation and recycling.

 Water Pollution:Local water bodies are contaminated by agricultural runoff and

household waste, affecting drinking and irrigation water.

 Air Pollution:Traditional cooking methods using wood and biomass fuels cause indoor airpollution.
Impact on Health and Livelihood

 Health Issues: Common respiratory problems, skin ailments, and gastrointestinal diseases dueto polluted
air and water.
 Agricultural Impact: Soil and water pollution affect crop yields and quality, leading
toeconomic instability.
Economic Impact: Healthcare costs for pollution-related illnesses add financial strain, and reduced
agricultural output affects overall economic stability.
Awareness and Mitigation Efforts
Community Awareness: Awareness sessions were conducted on pollution sources and effects, promoting
proper waste disposal and sustainable agricultural practices.

Practical Training: Training on waste segregation, composting, and the use of organicfertilizers.
Youth were encouraged to implement and promote these practices.
Overall Assessment

K. Kotturu is at a critical point regarding environmental sustainability. Despite significant pollution

challenges, there is a willingness among residents, especially the youth, to adopt new practices.
Continued education and practical training can help mitigate pollution and improve the community's
quality of life, leading to a healthier and more sustainable future.
CHAPTER 3: COMMUNITY SERVICE
PART
In the 2-week Community Internship Programme, I visited a village named K. Kotturu and
conducted numerous surveys and interviews to analyze the awareness and impact of
pollution in ruralIndia. I interacted with people of all age groups, from 8 to 80 years old.
Our 2-week plan was divided into four clusters for effective public interaction.

 School Children:
I conducted sessions with school kids to educate them about the basics of pollution, its
sources, and its harmful effects on health and the environment. Interactive activitiesand
games were used to make learning engaging and memorable.

 Teenagers:
I met with teenagers to discuss more in-depth aspects of pollution, including the impact of
plastic waste, water contamination, and air pollution. I encouraged them totake active roles in
reducing pollution by promoting recycling and proper waste disposalwithin their households
and community.

 Young Adults (20-40 years):

I interacted with young adults, emphasizing sustainable practices they can adopt in their daily
lives. I provided training on waste segregation, composting organic waste, and reducing the
use of single-use plastics. Additionally, I highlighted the importanceof conserving water and
using eco-friendly products.

 Adults Over 40:

Finally, I met with older adults to discuss the long-term health impacts of pollutionand the
importance of adopting sustainable practices. I informed them about community initiatives
they can participate in to combat pollution and improve their overall quality of life.

 Findings from the Interaction

After our interactions, we found that awareness about pollution and its effects varied among
differentage groups:

 30-40%of the population was somewhat aware of pollution but lacked

practical knowledge on how to combat it.

 20-30%had limited awareness and were unaware of the proper practices to

reduce pollution.

 30-40%were completely unaware of the pollution issues and their impacts.

 Applying Technical Knowledge:
 Used classroom-taught technical knowledge to solve real-time environmental problems.
 Time Management:
 Learned the importance of managing time efficiently to accomplish our tasks within the
giventimeframe.
 Communication Skills:
 Developed skills to address and communicate effectively with the public,
conveying complexinformation in a simple and understandable manner.

 Appreciation of Agriculture:
 Gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for the hard work involved in
cultivating food, reinforcing the importance of not wasting it.

 Teamwork and Respect:

 Learned to respect team members' feelings, emotions, and thoughts, which is crucial for
the successfulcompletion of any task.

By educating the community about pollution and its impacts, and by teaching practical
ways to reducepollution, we aimed to create a healthier and more sustainable environment
for the residents of K. Kotturu.
