Tutorial1

The document outlines a series of tutorial problems related to solid-state physics, focusing on bonding types, lattice structures, and calculations involving atomic packing factors, ratios, and densities in various crystal systems. It includes tasks such as identifying Bravais lattices, calculating planar and linear densities, and distinguishing between FCC and HCP lattices. Additionally, it requires the representation of specific directions and planes in cubic and HCP systems.

methane. Explain the basis of intermolecular bonds in case of methane.
2. NaCl lattice is shown in Fig 1. Identify its Bravais lattice with proper justification.
3. Calculate (a) atomic packing factor and (b) ideal c/a ratio in case of HCP lattice.
4. Show following directions in a cubic system: (a) [100], (b) [110], (c) [11 ], (d) [102]
and (e) [11 ].
5. Show following planes in a cubic system: (a) (100), (b) (110), (c) (11 ), (d) (102) and
(e) (11 ).
6. Show following directions and planes in an HCP system: (a) [10 0], (b) [11 3], (c)
(10 0), (d) (11 1).
7. Write the indices for all directions represented by <100> in a tetragonal cell.
8. Identify the indices for planes A and B (Fig. 2) and directions A, B, C and D (Fig. 3).
9. Calculate ratio of lattice parameter a, and atomic radius R in case of (a) SC, (b) BCC,
(c) FCC.
10. Calculate planar density in a FCC lattice for the following planes: (a) (100), (b) (110),
(c) (111), (d) (212).
11. Calculate linear density in a BCC lattice for the following directions (a) [100], (b)
[110], (c) [111], (d) [131].
12. Identify family of closest packed planes and closest packed directions in case of (a)
SC, (b) BCC, (c) FCC, (d) HCP. Does a close packed direction lie on the close
packed plane?
13. Both FCC and HCP are close packed systems with same atomic packing factor. What
is the characteristic difference between FCC and HCP lattice with respect to layering
of close packed planes? Draw octahedral and tetrahedral shapes. Identify octahedral
and tetrahedral voids between close packed planes in such systems.
