friendship—while proving that cat videos are a dangerous distraction!

Scene 1: The Hallway
(Emma is looking at her phone, eyes wide. Jake, Sophie, and Leo enter, chatting and
laughing.)

Emma: (Panicking) No, no, no! This can’t be happening!

Jake: (Bites into a snack) What’s happening? Did they cancel pizza day?!

Emma: No, worse! Mr. Lewis just emailed me saying I didn’t submit my history
project!

Sophie: (Dramatically gasps) This is a tragedy! A disaster!

Leo: (Nods) Yep. You’re doomed. Might as well move to another country.

Emma: Jake, please tell me you sent my project like you promised!

(Jake freezes, mid-bite. Everyone stares at him.)

Jake: (Nervous laugh) Haha… funny story…

Emma & Sophie: JAKE!

Jake: I was totally going to send it… but then I saw this adorable cat video, and—

Leo: (Facepalms) Classic Jake.

Emma: I cannot believe this! Now what do I do?

Mia: (walking by, overhearing) Well, well, well… Someone forgot to submit their
work?

Emma: Not helping, Mia!

Mia: (Smugly) Good luck explaining this to Mr. Lewis. He once gave my cousin a zero
just for using Comic Sans.

(Everyone gasps in horror.)

Emma: We have to find Mr. Lewis! Maybe he’ll understand.

Jake: Or we could… you know… fake an alien invasion?

Leo: Or say a dog ate your project?

Emma: (Sarcastic) Oh sure, because "my digital file was eaten by a dog" sounds totally
believable.

(They rush to the classroom.)

Scene 2: The Classroom

(Mr. Lewis is grading papers. The group enters, trying to act natural. Jake is
whispering a pep talk to himself.)

Emma: Uh… Mr. Lewis?

Mr. Lewis: (Without looking up) Yes, Emma?

Emma: I, um… There was a slight… tiny issue with my history project submission.

Mr. Lewis: (Finally looking up) Oh?

Jake: (Blurts out) It’s all my fault! I got distracted by a cat video! It was SO cute—

Emma: (Shoves Jake aside) What he means is… he was supposed to send it but forgot.
Can I still submit it?

(Long pause. Mr. Lewis stares at them.)

Mr. Lewis: (Sighs) Emma, you are one of my best students. Normally, I do not accept
late work…

(Emma, Jake, Sophie, and Leo clasp their hands together in silent prayer.)

Mr. Lewis: …but since this was an accident, I’ll allow it. Send it now.

Emma: (Relieved) Oh, thank you, thank you!

(Emma quickly types on her phone. The others celebrate silently.)

Mr. Lewis: (Looking at Jake) And Jake…

Jake: (Nervous) Y-Yes, sir?

Mr. Lewis: Next time, leave the cat videos for after school.

(Everyone laughs as Jake grins sheepishly. Mia walks by and smirks.)

Mia: You got lucky this time.

Leo: (Mock serious) Indeed, but at what cost?

(*Everyone laughs as Emma presses "SEND.")
