maximum torque transmitted is 15% more than the mean torque, the shear stress for
the material of the shaft is 210 N/mm2 and the factor of safety is 3.
ANSWER [107mm]

6. A bolt is subjected to an axial load of 10kN and a shear load of 5kN. The bolt is made
of steel FeE 300. Assume a factor of safety 2.5. Calculate the diameter of bolt using
shear stress theory.
ANSWER [12.3mm]

7. In the rear wheel of an automobile the spring motion was provided by a torsion bar
attached to a lever arm on which the wheel is mounted as shown in the fig-(1). A
force of 2500N is acting on the wheel through the lever arm which is 300mm long, a
bearing is mounted at 100mm from the axis of the lever arm on the torsion bar, and
the diameter of the torsion bar is 28 mm. Find the effective stress in the torsion bar at
the bearing using appropriate theory of failure.
