Grammar – Verb Patterns

Verb patterns have to do with the way certain verbs are followed by other words.

Verb patterns are something you need to learn because different verbs follow
different rules. Unfortunately, there isn’t one big rule to help you – it’s just the way
English works. The good news is that the more you see and use these verbs, the
easier it will become to remember them!

Verb pattern Examples

verb + to + infinitive - I want to buy a new car.


OR - I’d like to go abroad.
verb + sb + to + infinitve (or - My tutor expected me to do better.
no to) - The memory makes me shudder.

- We love going to parties.


verb + -ing - I enjoy travelling abroad.
-

verb + -ing OR + to + infinitive - It started raining / to rain.


(no change in meaning) - I continued working / to work at school.

- We are thinking of moving house.


- I’m looking forward to having more free
(verb) + preposition + -ing
time.
- I am good at playing the trumpet.
