History of Basketball

Basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith in December 1891 in Springfield,


Massachusetts. He was a Canadian physical .veducation instructor who created the game as an
indoor sport to keep his students active during winter. The original game used a soccer ball and
two peach baskets as goals. Over time, rules were modified, dribbling was introduced, and the
game evolved into the modern sport played worldwide today. The first professional league, the
National Basketball League (NBL), was founded in 1898. Later, the NBA (National Basketball
Association) was established in 1946, becoming the top basketball league globally.

Equipment of Basketball
Basketball – A round ball made of synthetic or leather material, used for dribbling, passing, and shooting.

Basketball Hoop – A metal ring with a net, mounted 10 feet high on a backboard.

Backboard – A rectangular board where the hoop is attached, used for rebounds and bank shots.

Court – A 28m x 15m playing surface with marked areas, including the three-point line, free-throw line, and key.

Shoes – Specially designed sneakers for traction and ankle support.

Skills of Basketball
Dribbling – Bouncing the ball while moving to maintain possession.

Passing – Transferring the ball to a teammate using chest, bounce, or overhead passes.

Shooting – Attempting to score by throwing the ball into the hoop (e.g., layups, jump shots, three-pointers).

Rebounding – Collecting the ball after a missed shot.

Defense – Preventing the opposing team from scoring through blocking, stealing, and positioning.

Terminologies of Basketball
Assist – A pass that leads directly to a basket.

Fast Break – A quick offensive play to score before the defense sets up.

Triple Double – When a player records double digits in three statistical categories (e.g., points, rebounds, assists).

Shot Clock – A timer (usually 24 seconds) that limits how long a team can hold possession before shooting.

Foul – A rule violation, such as illegal contact with an opponent.
