HSK (Level 4)

HSK (Level 4) is designed to test the candidates’ ability to use Chinese.

HSK (Level 4) is equivalent to Chinese Language Proficiency Scales for


Speakers of Other Languages Level Four and The Common European
Framework Reference for Language (CEF) B2. Candidates passing HSK (Level
4) can use Chinese dealing with a wide range of topics and communicate with
native speakers quite fluently.

Candidate Level
HSK (Level 4) is appropriate for students who have studied Chinese for two
academic years, 2-4 classes per week and achieved 1200 words and related
grammar points.

HSK (Level 4) consists of 100 questions split over Listening, Reading and Writing

The test will last for 105 minutes in total (including 5 minutes in which the test
takers fill in personal information).

1. Listening
Part 1/ 10 Questions. Each question will be played once. All the questions are
in monologues. Then a second voice will say a sentence relating to the
monologue. The sentence said by the second voice will also be printed on the
test paper. The candidate is required to judge whether this sentence is true or
false.

HSK INFORMATION 2015


Part 2/ 15 Questions. Each question will be played once. All the questions are
in dialogues between 2 voices. Then a third voice will raise a question. There
are 4 answers listed in the exam paper. The candidate is required to select the
correct answer according to the content heard.
Part 3/ 20 Questions. Each question will be played once. All the questions are
in dialogues between 2 voices (4 - 5 sentences). Then a third voice will raise a
question. There are 4 answers listed in the exam paper. The candidate is
required to select the correct answer according to the content heard.

2. Reading
Part 1/ 10 Questions. Each question will provide one to two sentences. There
is a blank in the sentence. The candidate is required to select the right word
from the options to fill in the blank.

Part 2/ 10 Questions. Each question will provide three sentences. The


candidate is required to put the sentences in order.

Part 3/ 20 Questions. 20 short passages are provided and each passage has one
or two questions. The candidate is required to pick the correct answer from
the 4 options.

3. Writing
Part 1/ 10 Questions. Each question will provide several words and the
candidate is required to make a sentence according to the words.

Part 2/ 5 Questions. Each question will provide a picture and a word. The
candidate is required to write a sentence about the picture with the word
provided.

3. Exam report
HSK (Level 4) exam report provides marks for Listening, Reading, Writing
which are then combined to give an Overall Mark. The pass mark at this level
is an Overall Mark of 180.

The HSK mark awarded remains valid for 2 years from the date of the exam
as a certificate for non-native Chinese speakers to study in Chinese
Universities and Colleges.
