Dual FM Fault

The document outlines procedures for handling dual FM (Flight Management) and FMGS (Flight Management and Guidance System) failures in the A330-300 aircraft. It details fault indications, reset procedures, and backup navigation modes available when both FMGCs fail, emphasizing the importance of monitoring and manual intervention during such failures. Additionally, it provides guidance on managing resets during various flight phases, including approaches and the potential impact on autopilot and navigation systems.

FM RESET FMGS 4.06.20 P1

• Reset of FMGCs may be done manually by the reset breaker on overhead panel
or it automatically resets itself when the FM software cannot work properly or
receives instructions to perform impossible operations. A resynchronization with
the other FM always follows:
• When reset is a minor one the system reset by itself
• When reset is a major one, reset recur at intervals and the memories are clear,
leading to a
• Loss of F‐PLN .Etc

Note: During FM Auto reset / FM Resynchronization / Manual reset, select the Auto pilot of
the non affected side and monitor

FM RESYNCHRONIZATION FMGS 4.06.20 P1

• Automatically occurs after an FM successful reset but it may occur independently

each time self comparison between FM1 and FM2 reveal discrepancies.
• One single resynchronization last approximately 25 seconds.
• If several resynchronization occur within 5 minutes independent modes
commences.

FM STATUS DURING RESET / RESYNCHRONIZATION FMGS 4.06.20 P1

During a reset
• ND shows "MAP NOT AVAILABLE"
• MCDU reverts to the A/C Status page, with "PLEASE WAIT" displayed in the
scratchpad with the FM light illuminated. (Affected side)
• Auto tuning lost
• Auto pilot reverts to the basic (HDG/VS or TRK/FPA) (If single reset selects other
Auto pilot if available).

Review:
• Auto flight FCOM 1.22.10
• FMGS failure (FM 1 + 2). FCOM 3.02.22 P 1
• Procedure FCOM 4.04.40 P17‐24
Note: FM source selector must be set to NORM position, to allow the display of NAV B/UP
prompt on the MCDU menu page.

B/UP NAV
• a degraded mode available when both FMGCs have failed
• accessible on the MCDU MENU page
• provides simplified IRS based navigation in case of a Dual FM failure (with successful
recovery)
• links the MCDU of the failed FM to its onside IRS to recover the NAV function
through the MCDU and ADIRS
• provides the following functions:
¾ Flight Planning (B/UP FL‐PLN planning + DIR to)
¾ Aircraft position using onside IRS or IRS 3 (B/UP IRS for onside IRS [1
or 2] + B/UP NAV IRS 3)
¾ F‐PLN display on ND
¾ No AP/FD NAV mode
¾ Limited lateral revision
¾ F‐PLN automatic sequencing

Note: MCDU 3 is not able to operate as B/UP NAV mode. FMGS 4.06.10 P3

PROCEDURE: Loss of two FMGCs (Total loss) FCOM 4.04.40 P17 & 24
¾ Monitor messages and when Auto Pilot disconnect, hand flight and call “ECAM ACTION".
¾ Ecam action message “FM 1 + 2 Fault”
¾ Check/Select FM source to NORM
¾ Select B/UP NAV on both MCDU MENU Page
¾ Select NAV on Both RMPs

If Auto Pilot disconnect (As a result of the FM fault)

(It will revert to basic mode HDG TRK/FPA)
9 Select TRK/FPA and try to engage 1 Auto Pilot in TRK/ALT mode (if one FG is still
available. If the 2 FGs are available, engage the auto pilot onside of the best IR)
9 Select proper Speed/Mach target and engage A/THR

FMGS RESET CONTROL

4.06.20 P1 to 4

SINGLE RESET (Select other Auto Pilot and monitor the reset)

DUAL RESET with loss of data and Auto recovery (Meaning a major reset and memory
clear) 4.06.20 P3
Note: 3 successive dual resets without result erase all pilot entered data.
FMGC capabilities are recovered when the messages “MAP NOT AVAILABLE" on ND and
"PLEASE WAIT" on MCDU disappear.

PROCEDURE: (For successful Recovery)

Fly the airplane (Raw data if necessary) and command PNF to perform as follows:
Select the initial data as follows:
MCDU (Data ÆA/C Status ÆActivate Data base [Cycle and modify if necessary]
ÆInsert / verify Idle/Perf)
Select DIR TO the require down path WPT
Select LAT REV at down path WPT and redefine Destination
Select the FUEL PRED page and enter the current a/c GW
Select PROG page and enter CRZ FL
Select the PERF page and insert CI

Check or reengage (as appropriate) the relevant Speed/Mack target and Vertical
mode
Redefine FL‐PLN
A‐ Perform a NAV accuracy check.
B‐ If IRS position differ from more than 20 NM consider an update of FM
position

DUAL LATCH (Both FMGCs are inoperative, FM and FG capability lost) FCOM 4.06.20 P4

INDICATIONS: Both NDs display "MAP NOT AVAILABLE" ECAM FM 1 + 2Fault

PROCEDURE: Fly the airplane (Raw data) and command PNF to perform as follows:
RESET successively both FMGCs with the FMGEC reset breakers on the overhead panel
QRH 2.17
If the reset is successful: Refer to Dual auto reset with loss of data and Auto recovery
FCOM 4.06.40 P3

If the reset is unsuccessful: Total Loss of both FMGCs

¾ Fly raw data (HDG / Speed / TRK FPA)
¾ Select FM source to NORM
¾ Select the NAV B/UP prompt on both MCDU DATA pages
¾ Refer to NAV B/UP How to use chapter

A330-300 DUAL FM / FMGS FAILURE

MANUAL RESET OF FMGCs FMGS 4.06.20 P6

• If required in flight, reset one at a time be guided by QRH 2.17 (Reset of computers)
Note: It is recommended to use FMGEC reset button rather than FM reset button.
• There are two reset breakers per FMGC, by resetting the breakers:
¾ The FM reset the flight management part of the FMGS
¾ The FMGEC reset the (1) flight management, (2) flight guidance and (3) flight
envelope parts.

There is NO limitation in the number of resets

ERRONEOUS PREDICTION
The FMGS may display temporary erroneous predictions that can affect various data
such as ECON SPEED / MACH, Optimum FL LVL, fuel or time predictions.

ON GROUND check:
Cruise LVL and ISA temp (Init page A)
Gross weight (Init page B)

ON GROUND and INFLIGHT check:

Reenter the same Cost index to restart a computation or
Make a copy active then activate the SEC or
Make a Direct to require down path Waypoint

FM RESET DURING APRROACH

FMGS RESET DURING ILS APPROACH: FMGS 4.06.20 P5

Above 700 Ft Agl:

• ILS tuning may be loss (Due to a dual reset will cause a loss of LOC/GS and the
disengagement of Auto Pilot in this case.
• Perform a Go Around if not Stabilized at 1,000Ft, and if Visual references are not
acquired.

Below 700Ft Agl:

• A Single or double reset does not affect an ILS approach below 700Ft AGL
• ILS frequency is locked and Auto Pilot Flight director remains engaged
• The automatic landing capability is not affected;

FMGS RESET DURING NON Precision Approach FMGS 4.06.20 P5

• If the Master FMGS fails, Auto Pilot, Flight director an if managed modes are lost
and FD engage in basic modes.
• Perform a Go Around if not Stabilized at 1,0000Ft, and visual references are not
established.
