Introduction
In the previous lesson, you were presented with what a linear equation in two
variables is and have written linear equations in the form 𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 = 𝐶. In the next set
of lessons, we are going to write linear equations in the form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏 and find out
how to sketch their graphs in the Cartesian Plane.
Let’s find out if you can still remember what linear equations in two variables
are through the activity that follows.
Direction: In each situation, encircle the given equation if it is a linear equation in two
variables and underline the equation if it is not. After which, answer the question that
follows.
1. The salary (𝑠) received by a salesperson this pandemic is ₱900 for reporting
three times per week plus a 5% commission on all sales (𝑥) is modeled by the
equation 𝑠 = 900 + 0.05𝑥.
2. A person who jogs slowly can expect to expend 300 calories per hour. The
number of calories (𝐶) expended after (𝑡) hours is given by the model 𝐶 = 300𝑡.
3. The product of the ages of Alberto (𝑥) and Fidel (𝑦) is 35 and can be expressed
as 𝑥𝑦 = 35.
4. The square of a number 𝑥 added to four times the number 𝑦 is equal to 8 can be
expressed as 𝑥 2 + 4𝑦 = 8.
5. The weekly savings (𝑠) of Rodrigo as a student this pandemic depends on his
allowance (𝑎). If he saves 5% of his allowance every week, then it can be
expressed as 𝑠 = 0.05 𝑎.
5. 𝑠 = .05 𝑎
4. 𝑥 2 + 4𝑦 = 8

Question: What do the encircled equations have in common? 3. 𝑥𝑦 = 35

2. 𝐶 = 300𝑡
1. 𝑠 = 900 + 0.05𝑥
____________________________________________________

The equations 𝑠 = 900 + 0.05𝑥, 𝐶 = 300𝑡, and 𝑠 = .05 𝑎 involve two unknown
quantities, hence use two different variables. Also, the degree of these equations is 1.

The following equations have two variables but are NOT linear equations.

➢ 𝑥 2 + 4𝑦 = 8 The degree of a term should only be 1 or the exponents

on both variables must be 1.
3
➢ +𝑦 =7 The variable should not be in the denominator.
𝑥

➢ 𝑥𝑦 = 35 The variables should not be in the same term.

➢ 2√3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 6 The variable should not be in a radical sign.

Lesson Writing Linear Equations in Two
1 Variables in the Form 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃
Aside from the form 𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 = 𝐶, a linear equation in two variables can also
be written in slope-intercept form also known as the 𝑦-form.

The Slope-Intercept Form of the equation of a line is 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏, where 𝑚 and

𝑏 are real numbers, 𝑚 is the slope and 𝑏 is the 𝑦-intercept.

Rewrite the following equations in the form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏.

Example 1. 3𝑥 + 𝑦 = 6
3𝑥 − 𝑦 = 6 Given
3𝑥 − 𝑦 + (−3𝑥) = 6 + (−3𝑥) (APE) Add −3𝑥 to both sides to retain the
term with the variable 𝑦 on one side.
−𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 6 Simplify.
−1(−𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 6) Multiply the whole equation by −1 to make
𝒚 = 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟔 the coefficient of 𝑦 positive.
𝑚 = 3 and 𝑏 = −6 Note: Don’t multiply −1 to the equation if the
coefficient of 𝑦 is already positive.

Example 2. 3𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 10
3𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 10 Given
3𝑥 − 2𝑦 + (−3𝑥) = 10 + (−3𝑥) (APE) Add −3𝑥 to both sides to retain the
−2𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 10 term with the variable 𝑦 on one side.

Example 3. 3(𝑥 − 5) = 4𝑦 + 2𝑥
3(𝑥 − 5) = 4𝑦 + 2𝑥 Given
3𝑥 − 15 = 4𝑦 + 2𝑥 Multiply first to remove the parenthesis.
3𝑥 + (−2𝑥) − 15 = 4𝑦 + 2𝑥 + (−2𝑥) (APE) Add −2𝑥 to both sides to retain the
𝑥 − 15 = 4𝑦 term with the variable 𝑦 on one side.

Example 4. 12𝑥 − 6𝑦 + 4 = 0
12𝑥 − 6𝑦 + 4 = 0 Given
12𝑥 − 6𝑦 + 4 + (−12𝑥) + (−4) = 0 + (−12𝑥) + (−4) Add −12𝑥 and −4 to both sides of
the equation to retain the term
−6𝑦 = −12𝑥 − 4 with the variable 𝑦 on one side.

Other Examples: 𝑨𝒙 + 𝑩𝒚 = 𝑪 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃
1. 𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 4 = 0 𝑥 + 2𝑦 = −4 1
𝑦=− 𝑥−2

Lesson Graphing Linear Equations in
2 Two Variables
Activity 2: Plotting Points
An N95 mask (𝑥) costs ₱16.00 and a regular surgical mask (𝑦) costs ₱4.00.
Determine how many of each kind of masks Jose can buy for ₱60.00. We can use
the equation 16𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 60. This equation can be written as 𝑦 = −4𝑥 + 15.

1. Complete the table below to find how many of each kind of mask Jose can buy for
₱60.00. The first two rows are done for you.
2. On a coordinate plane, graph the ordered pairs (𝑥, 𝑦), then connect the points.
What can you conclude about the figure formed?

𝒙 Substitute Evaluate Simplify 𝒚 (𝒙, 𝒚)

0 𝑦 = −4(𝟎) + 15 𝑦 = 0 + 15 𝑦 = 15 15 (0, 15)

1 𝑦 = −4(𝟏) + 15 𝑦 = −4 + 15 𝑦 = 11 11 (1, 11)
2
3
4
5
6

The graph of 𝑦 = −4𝑥 + 15 is a line that falls from left to right. The points (0, 15),
(1, 11), and all the other points contained on that line make up the solution set of
𝑦 = −4𝑥 + 15. Since we are talking about the number of pieces of masks in the problem,
we are only going to consider the positive integers as a solution for this problem.

Lesson 2.a
The solution of a linear equation in two variables is an ordered pair
(𝑥, 𝑦) that makes a true mathematical statement of the equation.

Example: Determine if the given ordered pairs are solutions of 𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 5.

a. (−1, 3)
Solution:
𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 5 Given
−1 + 2(3) = 5 Substitute −1 to 𝑥 and 3 to 𝑦.
−1 + 6 = 5 Perform the operation.
5=5 Simplify.
True Since 5 = 5, the ordered pair (−1, 3) is a solution.

6
b. (1, 2)
Solution:
𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 5 Given
1 + 2(2) = 5 Substitute 1 to 𝑥 and 2 to 𝑦.
1+4=5 Perform the operation.
5=5 Simplify.
True
Since 5 = 5, the ordered pair (1, 2) is a solution.
c. (−2, −1)
Solution:
𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 5 Given
−2 + 2(−1) = 5 Substitute −2 to 𝑥 and −1 to 𝑦.
−2 − 2 = 5 Perform the operation.
−4 = 5 Simplify.
False Since −4 ≠ 5, the ordered pair (−2, − 1) is NOT
a solution.

Lesson 2.b

The graph of an equation involving two variables, 𝑥 and 𝑦, is the collection

of all points (𝑥, 𝑦) that are solutions of the equation. If we were to plot thousands
of solutions, the dots that we drew would merge into a solid line. Hence, the
graph of any linear equation in two variables is a (straight) line.
Since two points determine a line on a plane, you must find at least two
ordered pairs or solutions in order to graph the line. However, it would be better if you
can find three solutions for you to use the third solution in checking your graph. If you
plot all three points and they cannot be connected by a straight line, then this signals
that something is wrong.

Ways of Graphing Linear Equations in Two Variables

A. Graphing a Linear Equation Using Table of Values

Steps:
1. Find at least two ordered pairs that satisfy the equation by assigning values
for 𝑥 and solving for 𝑦.
2. Plot the points.
3. Draw a line through the points.
Example 1. Graph 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = −4.
Table of Values
Step 1. Assign values for 𝑥 and solve for 𝑦. 𝑥 −2 0 1

The three ordered pairs are

(−2, 0), (0, −4), and (1, −6).
(0, −4)

(1, −6)

Step 3. Draw a line through the points.

The graph of the

line falls from left to
right. Thus, the slope of
the line is negative.
Based from the graph,
𝑚 = −2 and 𝑏 = −4.

B. Graphing a Linear Equation Using the Intercepts Method

The 𝑥-coordinate of the point where a line intersects the 𝑥-axis is

called the 𝒙-intercept of the line.
The 𝑦-coordinate of the point where a line intersects the 𝑦-axis is
called the 𝒚-intercept of the line.

Steps: Note:
1. Solve for the 𝑥- and 𝑦-intercepts of the equation. The 𝑥-intercept of the

3. Draw a straight line through the points.
The 𝑦-intercept of the
line is the value of 𝑦
Example 2. Graph 3𝑥 − 4𝑦 = 12 when 𝑥 = 0.

Step 1. Solve for the intercepts.

To find the 𝑥-intercept, let 𝑦 = 0 To find the 𝑦-intercept, let 𝑥 = 0 and

Step 3. Draw a line through the points.

The graph of the line

rises from left to right.
Thus, the slope of the line
is positive. Based from the
3
graph, 𝑚 = 4 and 𝑏 = −3.

C. Graphing a Linear Equation Using Its Slope and a Point

Steps:
1. Express the equation in slope-intercept form, if necessary.
2. Solve for one point and plot it.
3. Starting from the point, use the rise and run in locating a second point.
4. Draw a line through the two points.
Example 3. 𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 6
Step 1. Rewrite the equation in slope-intercept form to be able to identify the slope.
1 1
𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 6 𝑦 = − 3 𝑥 + 2 ; so 𝑚 = − 3

Step 2. Solve for one point by assigning values for either 𝑥 or 𝑦 and plot it.
Let 𝑥 = 3

𝑦 = −3𝑥 + 2
1
𝑦 = − 3 (𝟑) + 2
𝑦 = −1 + 2
𝑦=1
The point is located at (3, 1).

Step 4. Draw a line through the two points.

The slope of the line

is negative so the (0, 2)
graph of the line falls (3, 1)
from left to right.

Example 4. Graph 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 3.

Step 1. Since 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 3 is already in 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏, we now identify the slope (𝑚).

If otherwise, then rewrite first the equation to 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏.

(0, 3)
Since the 𝑦-intercept is already
identified in the equation and also
considered as one point, then we
can use it as our first point,
𝒃 = 3 or (0, 3).

Step 3. From the 𝑦-intercept, use the rise and run to locate a second point.

Lesson 2.c
Graphing Horizontal and Vertical Lines

The equation 𝑥 = 𝑎 represents the vertical line that intersects the

𝑥-axis at (𝑎, 0). If 𝑎 = 0, the line is the 𝑦-axis.
The equation 𝑦 = 𝑏 represents the horizontal line that intersects the
𝑦-axis at (0, 𝑏). If 𝑏 = 0, the line is the 𝑥-axis.

Example 5. Graph 𝑥 = 5.
The equation 𝑥 = 5 is equivalent to 𝑥 + 0𝑦 = 5. Thus, for any value of 𝑦,
𝑥 is always equal to 5.
If 𝑦 = 1, 𝑥 + 0(𝟏) = 5
𝑥=5

If 𝑦 = 3, 𝑥 + 0(𝟑) = 5
𝑥=5
Note:
The graph of x = 5 is a vertical line
passing through the point (5, 0). Its
slope is undefined.
Example 6. Graph 𝑦 = −3.
The equation 𝑦 = −3 is equivalent to 0𝑥 + 𝑦 = −3. Thus, for any value
of 𝑥, 𝑦 is always equal to −3.

If 𝑥 = 1, 0(𝟏) + 𝑦 = −3
𝑦 = −3

If 𝑥 = −2, 0(−𝟐) + 𝑦 = −3
𝑦 = −3
Note:
The graph of y = −3 is a horizontal
line passing through the point
(0, −3). Its slope is 0.

Lesson 2.c.
Graphing Horizontal and Vertical Lines
The equation 𝑥 = 𝑎 represents the vertical line that intersects the 𝑥-axis at (𝑎, 0).
The equation 𝑦 = 𝑏 represents the horizontal line that intersects the 𝑦-axis at (0, 𝑏).

Clues on Graphing:
1. A line with a positive slope rises from left to right. The greater the slope the steeper
the line rises.
2. A line with a negative slope falls from left to right.
3. A line with 0 slope shows a horizontal line while a line with an undefined slope shows
a vertical line.
