P1 Ch2 Quadratics

The document covers the topic of quadratics, including methods such as completing the square, solving equations, and using the quadratic formula. It provides examples of quadratic functions, their maximum or minimum values, and the discriminant's role in determining the nature of roots. Additionally, it discusses modeling real-world scenarios, such as the trajectory of a tennis ball, using quadratic functions.

QUADRATICS Pure Year 1, Chapter 2

Completing the Square

Write the below in completed square form State the maximum or minimum value of the
function, and the corresponding value of 𝑥

𝑦 = 𝑥 2 + 12𝑥 + 10

𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 2 + 13𝑥 − 1

4
𝑔 𝑥 = −3𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 +
3
−𝑏 ± 𝑏2 − 4𝑎𝑐
Solving Equations 𝑥=
2𝑎

Factorising Completing the Square The Quadratic Formula

Solve 𝑎2 − 2𝑎 − 15 = 0 Find the roots of 𝑓 𝑥 = 2𝑥 2 − 4𝑥 + 1 Solve 𝑦 2 − 3𝑦 − 1 = 0

Exam Tip: unless it is a ‘show that’

question, you can simply use your
‘Pseudo’ Quadratics or Quadratics ‘in disguise’ calculator to solve quadratic equations!

Solve 𝑥 4 + 2𝑥 2 − 35 = 0 Solve 7 2𝑥 + 2(22𝑥 ) − 4 = 0

The Discriminant
Given that 𝑓 𝑥 has a repeated root, find the value of 𝑘. The discriminant is:

𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑘𝑥 2 + 5𝑘𝑥 + 3 If <0

If >0

If =0

Prove that the curve with equation 𝑦 = 3𝑥 2 + 𝑐 + 6 𝑥 + 𝑐,

where 𝑐 is a real constant, has two distinct roots for all values of 𝑐.
Modelling and Problem Solving
A tennis ball is thrown from a point 1m above the ground. It reaches its maximum vertical height after travelling
a horizontal distance of 5m. It is at a vertical height of 6m after travelling a horizontal distance of 9m.

Given that its path is modelled as a quadratic function with vertical distance 𝑦m and horizontal distance 𝑥m,
find 𝑦 in terms of 𝑥.

Work out the horizontal distance it has travelled when it reaches the ground. General forms of quadratics:

𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐

𝑦 =𝑎 𝑥−𝑏 𝑥−𝑐

2
𝑦 =𝑎 𝑥−𝑏 +𝑐
