Assignment / Tutorial Writing Instructions

➢ Do not copy directly from others, books, websites, or AI-generated content.

➢ Understand the concepts before writing. Express ideas in your own words.

➢ Where applicable, provide geometric interpretations (e.g., explain subspaces as planes

or lines in ℝ𝑛 ).

➢ Do not use AI tools without verification. AI-generated content may not always be fully

correct or detailed.

1 Define Vector Space and Subspace.

2 Show that the set 𝑉 = {(1, 𝑥): 𝑥 ∈ ℝ} with the operation defined as
(1, 𝑢) + (1, 𝑣) = (1, 𝑢 + 𝑣) and 𝑘(1, 𝑢) = (1, 𝑘𝑢) is a vector space.
3 𝑢 𝑣
Consider the set 𝑉 = 𝑀2 (ℝ) = {[ ] / 𝑢, 𝑣, 𝑤, 𝑥 ∈ ℝ} with usual operations, show that 𝑉is a vector
𝑤 𝑥
space.
4 Check whether 𝑉 = ℝ2 is a vector space with respect to the operations
(𝑎, 𝑏) + (𝑐, 𝑑) = (𝑎 + 𝑐 + 5, 𝑏 + 𝑑 − 4) and
𝑘(𝑎, 𝑏) = (𝑘𝑎 + 3𝑘 − 3, 𝑘𝑏 − 𝑘 + 1) ∈ 𝑉.
5 Determine whether vector space or not, a set 𝑉 = ℝ3 with operations
(𝑥1 , 𝑦1 , 𝑧1 ) + (𝑥2 , 𝑦2 , 𝑧2 ) = (𝑥1 + 𝑥2 + 1, 𝑦1 + 𝑦2 + 1, 𝑧1 + 𝑧2 + 1) and
𝑘(𝑥1 , 𝑦1 , 𝑧1 ) = (3𝑘𝑥1 , 3𝑘𝑦1 , 3𝑘𝑧1 ).
6 Write in detail all those properties which will not be satisfied of a vector space for the set
𝑉 = ℝ2 with operations (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) + (𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ) = (𝑥1 − 𝑥2 , 𝑦1 − 𝑦2 ) and 𝑘(𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) = (𝑘𝑥1 , 1).
(detailed proof is expected of all properties which are not satisfied by the set w.r.t the given operations)
7 Determine whether following is vector space or not 𝑉 = {(𝑥, 𝑦, 0)|𝑥, 𝑦 ∈ 𝑅} with respect to usual
addition and scalar multiplication.
8 Check whether the following is a subspace. Justify your answer.
𝑊 = {(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) ∈ 𝑅 3 |5𝑥 + 7𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 0, 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐 ∈ 𝑅} of ℝ3 .
Is 𝑊 a subspace of ℝ3 ? Justify your answer and explain its geometric significance.
9 Check whether the following is a subspace. Justify your answer.
𝑊 = {(𝑥, 𝑦) ∈ 𝑅 2 |𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 = 𝑐 , 𝑐 ≠ 0} of 𝑅 2 .
10 Is 𝑊 a subspace of 𝑉 ?
𝑊 = {(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧)|𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 𝑧 2 ≤ 1}, 𝑉 = 𝑅 3
