Assignment 1
Instruction: Answer all questions with each step clearly shown. Each step will be marked individually
and hence carrying a long calculation over many steps is strongly discouraged. Show the
processes/cycle in a clear diagram wherever applicable. Scan and upload the answers in PDF format
only.
1. An ideal steam power plant is to be designed for a steam temperature at turbine inlet of 350 °C and
an exhaust pressure of 0.1 bar. After isentropic expansion of steam in the turbine, the moisture
content at the turbine exhaust is not to exceed 12%. Determine the maximum allowable steam
pressure at the turbine inlet and calculate the Rankine cycle efficiency for these steam conditions.
Estimate also the mean temperature of heat addition. Neglect pump work. [30]
2. A steam power station uses the following cycle: steam at boiler outlet: 150 bar, 600 °C; Reheat at
40 bar to 600 °C; Condenser at 0.02 bar. Assuming ideal processes and neglecting pump work, find
3. In a reheat cycle, the initial steam pressure and the maximum temperature are 150 bar and 550 °C
respectively. If the condenser pressure is 0.1 bar and the moisture at the condenser inlet is 15 %,
determine (a) reheat pressure (b) work output of the low pressure turbine. (Assume ideal processes).
