23AEE111 Engineering Mechanics for Aerospace
Tutorial -1 (06-03-25)
1. A stake is being pulled out of the ground by means of two ropes as shown. Knowing that α = 30°,
determine the magnitude of the force P so that the resultant force exerted on the stake is vertical,
and the corresponding magnitude of the resultant.

2. Determine the x and y components of each of the forces shown. And find the resultant.

3. Knowing that α = 20° , determine the tension (a) in cable AC, (b) in rope BC.

4. Two cables are tied together at C and are loaded as shown. Knowing that P = 300 N, determine the
tension in cables AC and BC.

5. Two cables BG and BH are attached to frame ACD as shown. Knowing that the tension in cable
BG is 540 N, determine the components of the force exerted by cable BG on the frame at B.

6. A rectangular plate is supported by three cables as shown. Knowing that the tension in cable AB is
408 N, determine the components of the force exerted on the plate at B.

7. Three cables are used to tether a balloon as shown. Knowing that the tension in cable AC is 444 N,
draw the free-body diagram needed to determine the vertical force P exerted by the balloon at A.

8. A container of mass m = 120 kg is supported by three cables as shown. Draw the free-body
diagram needed to determine the tension in each cable.
