ECE 2312 Hydraulics II
Assignment 1 + Part of Practical
Instruction: Answer all the questions showing step by step calculations clearly and neatly
Date of Submission: 19 March, 2025
1. A centrifugal pump must produce a head o 15 m with a flow rate 40 L/s and shaft speed of 725
rev/min. The pump must be dynamically similar to either pump A or pump B whose
characteristics are shown in the table below.

Which of the two designs will give the highest efficiency and what impeller diameter should
be used
Pump A D = 0.25 m N = 1000 rev/min
Q (L/s) 8 11 15 19
H(m) 8.1 7.9 7.3 6.1
η (%) 48 55 62 56

Pump B D = 0.55 m N = 900 rev/min

Q (L/s) 6 8 9 11
H(m) 42 36 33 27
η (%) 55 65 66 58
(5 Marks)
2. Two centrifugal pumps have the head and discharge characteristics as follows,
Discharge (Q) L/s 0 4 8 12 16 20 24
PUMP A Head (m) 50.0 51.8 50.8 48.0 42.5 32.5 18.3
PUMP B Head (m) 46.7 45.9 44.2 40.3 34.3 26.0 17.0
Efficiency (η) (%) 15 40 75 80 72 39 15

Both pumps are installed together and are required to pump water from a lower reservoir
elevation 260 m to a higher reservoir elevation 298 m through a pipe of 200 mm diameter and
length 286 (ℰ=0.26) on the suction side and 150 mm and length 2000 m (ℰ=0.26) on delivery
side. The pipe fitting installed are: 3 threaded 90o bends, one globe valve fully open, one angle
valve fully open and one gate valve ¼ closed. Water temperature was 20oC.
(i) Determine the heads and discharge delivered by each pump if they are installed one
pump at a time (single pump installation) and the corresponding power consumed by
each of them.
(ii) Determine the head and discharge delivered if the pumps are connected in series and
the power required by each pump.
(iii) Determine the head and discharge delivered if the pumps are connected in parallel and
the power required by each pump. (5 Marks)

3. A centrifugal pump delivers 0.055 m3/s of water from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir
to a total height of 16 m. The diameter of the pipe is 150 mm and it is 22 m long. If the overall
efficiency is 75%, calculate the power developed by the pump and power required to drive the
pump. Take kinematic viscosity of water, 𝜈 = 1.002 x 10-6 m2/s. (5 Marks)

4. A centrifugal pump, having the characteristics tabulated below, delivers water from a river at
elevation 102 m to a reservoir with a water level of 135 m, through a 350 mm diameter cast-
iron pipe. The frictional head loss in the pipeline is given by hf = 650Q2, where hf is the head
loss in metres (m) and Q is the discharge in m3/s. Minor head losses from valves and fittings
amount to 100Q2 in the same units.
Q (m3/s) 0.00 0.02 0.05 0.06 0.08 0.10 0.12 0.14 0.15 0.18 0.20
H (m) 60.0 59.5 58.0 57.0 55.0 52.0 48.0 43.5 41.0 31.0 25.0
η (%) 16.0 30.0 50.0 56.0 68.0 78.0 80.0 74.0 70.0 55.0 42.0

(i) Determine the discharge and head in the pipeline (at the duty point), power produced by the
pump and the power required by the pump at the duty point (5 Marks)
(ii) Determine the discharge and head produced by two pumps connected in series and the power
produced and power needed by each of the pump at duty point. (5 Marks)

5. The outside diameter of the impeller of Pump A is 360 mm and delivers 30 l/s of water against
a head of 17 m with a speed of a 900 rpm. If the flow rate of a similar pump B is twice of Pump
A and rotates at 1200 rpm. Determine (i) the diameter of the impeller and head for Pump B (ii)
the power generated by both pumps. (5 Marks)
