HW#1 PI Controller Design First Semester 2024
Homework Title:
Design and implementation of a Proportional-plus-Integral Controller for a speed control.
Description: You are provided with the system depicted in Figure 1, which represents a closed-loop speed
control for a DC-Motor. The system is responsible for deriving the DC-Motor speed to the desired value
within a specific settling time (𝑇𝑆 ) and percent overshot (𝑂𝑆%). At this stage, you are only required to design
and implement the section of the system enclosed by the dashed red rectangle illustrated in Figure 2.

Figure 1: Closed-Loop position control system.
Note: All Op-Amp’s supply voltages are +18 𝑉 & − 18 𝑉. Use LM324 Op-Amp IC.
2. Verify your design by applying a square wave (with an appropriate amplitude and frequency) to the
P-Controller, compare the theoretical results with the obtained one and discuss your results.
4. Obtain the gain-frequency response for the designed integrator. Compare the theoretical results with
the obtained one and discuss your results.
5. Verify your design by applying a square wave (with an appropriate amplitude and frequency) to the
I-Controller. Compare the theoretical results with the obtained one and discuss your results.
6. Using the P-Controller and I-Controller designed above (steps 1 & 3), build a PI- Controller as
illustrated in Figure 3 and apply a square wave as in step 5 to the input. Draw the output voltage and
discuss your results.
9. Compare the practical results with the theoretical ones and make your discussion.

10. Design and simulate the subtraction junction that perform the following operation. Test your design
and prepare your circuit.

Notes:
Each group, consisting of up to three members is required to complete a project and submit a report along with the
practical work within one week.
Following the submission, each group will participate in a discussion to assess their work and receive a grade. It is
important that all members contribute to both the project and the report.
Best of luck
