Ch 5

Footprints without feet

Q1. Griffin was rather a lawless person. Comment.

Ans. Griffin was indeed a lawless person, as he showed no respect for the rules of society and
morality. He used his invisibility to steal, cheat, hurt, and terrorize people. He did not care about the
consequences of his actions, nor did he have any remorse or empathy for his victims. He was selfish,
arrogant, and violent. He thought he could do whatever he wanted without being caught or
punished.

Q2. Scientists contribute to make the world a better place. Griffin is an antithesis of this statement.

Ans. Scientists are supposed to use their knowledge and skills to advance human civilization and
solve problems. They are expected to follow ethical principles and be responsible for their
discoveries and inventions. Griffin, however, was the opposite of this ideal. He abused his scientific
talent to create a formula that made him invisible, but instead of using it for good, he used it for evil.
He did not share his findings with anyone, nor did he try to use his invisibility for any noble cause. He
only cared about satisfying his own curiosity and greed.

Q3. How did Griffin find himself invisible but naked in the chill January air for the second time?

Ans. Griffin found himself invisible but naked in the chill January air for the second time when he
escaped from the house of Dr Kemp, his former colleague. Dr Kemp had betrayed him and called the
police to arrest him. Griffin managed to break free from the ropes that tied him, but he had to leave
behind his clothes and shoes that made him visible. He ran out of the house in a hurry, hoping to
find another place to hide and recover.

Q4. Describe the curious episode which takes place in the draper’s study.

Ans. The curious episode which takes place in the draper’s study is when Griffin enters the shop of
Mr Bunting, a draper who also rents out rooms. Griffin sneaks into Mr Bunting’s study at night and
tries to steal some money from his desk. However, he is interrupted by Mr Bunting and his wife, who
hear some strange noises and come to investigate. They are shocked and scared to see the drawers
opening and closing by themselves, and the money floating in the air. They think that they are
witnessing a ghost or a miracle, and they run away in panic.

Q5. How would you assess Griffin as a scientist and a human being? What qualities and values would
you suggest will make him a better person?

Ans. Griffin was a brilliant scientist, but a terrible human being. He had a great intellect, but no
morals or emotions. He lacked compassion, honesty, integrity, and respect for others. He was driven
by his own ego and ambition, and he did not care about the harm he caused to himself or others. He
was isolated from society and had no friends or family. He was unhappy and miserable.

To make him a better person, I would suggest that he should develop some qualities and values such
as:

1. Humility: He should realize that he is not superior or invincible, and that he has limitations and
flaws like everyone else.

2. Responsibility: He should accept the consequences of his actions, and try to correct his mistakes
instead of running away from them.
3. Empathy: He should try to understand and care about the feelings and needs of other people, and
not hurt them for his own benefit.

4. Cooperation: He should try to work with others instead of against them, and seek help when he
needs it.

5. Curiosity: He should use his scientific curiosity for positive purposes, such as learning new things,
exploring new possibilities, and solving problems.

Q6. Griffin set the house on fire when he was thrown out. Anger and revenge are no way solution to
any problem. You are a columnist for class 10 magazine. Create a column on importance of anger
management for teens and detrimental effect on health.

Ans.

Anger Management:

A Skill for Life Anger is a natural and normal emotion that we all experience from time to time. It can
be triggered by various factors such as stress, frustration, injustice, disappointment, or conflict.
Anger can be useful when it motivates us to take action against something that is wrong or unfair.
However, anger can also be harmful when it becomes excessive or uncontrollable. It can lead to
aggression, violence, revenge, or self-destruction. It can damage our relationships with others, our
health, our self-esteem, and our happiness.

Therefore, it is important to learn how to manage our anger effectively and constructively. Anger
management is not about suppressing or denying our anger, but about expressing it in a healthy and
appropriate way. It is a skill that can help us cope with difficult situations and emotions, and improve
our quality of life.

Some tips on how to practice anger management:

1. Recognize the signs of anger: Pay attention to the physical and mental changes that occur when
you are angry, such as increased heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, muscle tension, sweating,
shaking, clenched fists, red face, loud voice, or negative thoughts. These signs can help you identify
when you are angry and how intense your anger is.

2. Calm yourself down: When you feel angry, try to calm yourself down before you react. You can
use various techniques such as deep breathing, counting to ten, taking a break, listening to music,
meditating, or doing something that relaxes you. These techniques can help you lower your arousal
level and regain your composure.

3. Identify the cause of your anger: Try to understand what made you angry and why. You can ask
yourself questions such as: What happened? How did I feel? What did I think? What did I want?
What did I need? These questions can help you analyse the situation and your own feelings and
needs.

4. Express your anger assertively: Once you are calm and clear, you can express your anger in a
respectful and constructive way. You can use “I” statements to communicate how you feel and what
you want or need, without blaming or attacking the other person. For example: “I feel angry when
you interrupt me because I think you don’t respect me. I want you to listen to me and let me finish
what I have to say.” You can also use active listening skills to understand the other person’s point of
view and show empathy.
5. Seek solutions: After expressing your anger, try to find a way to resolve the problem or conflict
that caused it. You can brainstorm ideas with the other person or a third party, and look for a win-
win solution that satisfies both parties. You can also compromise or agree to disagree if necessary.
You can also seek professional help if your anger is too severe or frequent, or if it interferes with
your daily functioning.

Anger management is a skill that can benefit us in many ways. It can help us improve our
communication skills, our problem-solving skills, our emotional intelligence, our self-control, our
self-confidence, and our mental and physical health. It can also help us prevent or reduce the
negative consequences of anger, such as violence, crime, injury, illness, depression, anxiety, or
isolation. Anger management is a skill that we can learn and practice throughout our lives. It is a skill
that can make us happier and more successful.
