cENTRIFUGE EXTRACTOR

This instruction manual outlines the procedure for using a centrifuge extractor apparatus to extract bitumen from a sample. It includes a detailed test procedure, starting from weighing the sample and filter paper to calculating the percentage of bitumen extracted. The process involves using benzene as a solvent and requires multiple cycles of centrifugation for complete extraction.

INSTRUCTION MANUAL
FOR
CENTRIFUGE EXTRACTOR APPARATUS

OBJ ECTIVE:
1

Apparatus
Centrifuge Extractor
Beaker
500 g bitumen sample
Filter paper
Theory
A centrifugal extractor—also known as a centrifugal contactor or annular centrifugal contactor—
uses the rotation of the rotor inside a centrifuge to mix two immiscible liquids outside the rotor and
to separate the liquids in the field of gravity inside the rotor
Test Procedure
1. Weigh 500g bitumen sample (W1) and place the sample in the cup of the centrifuge.
2. Weigh the filter paper and note it as (F1)
3. Fill the benzene (dissolver) into the cup up to the sample top (as thoroughly soaked).
4. The benzene will separate the aggregates and bitumen.
5. Now place the filter paper and cover the sample in the centrifuge apparatus.
6. Now place the beaker at the outlet of the centrifuge to collect the extracted sample.
7. Leave up to 1 hour for the solvent to dissolve the bitumen and other ingredients of asphaltic
pavement.
8. Now start the centrifuge machine and increase the speed gradually
9. The bitumen and benzene will completely drain out in the beaker. Now again, add more benzene
into the cup and again start the same process.
10. Run the centrifuge again and again until the bitumen extraction is completed. The extracted
material seems to light straw colour.
11. Weigh the extracted material as W2.
12. Now remove the filter paper and dry it through the oven at the temperature range of
13. 1050°C to 1100°C and allow it to cool to room temperature.
14. Finally, weigh the dried filter paper as F2.

Observation and Calculation:

Weight of mixture sample (W1)
Weight of filter paper before extraction (F1)
2

Weight of mixture after extraction (W2)

Weight of filter paper after extraction (F2)
Weight of filler collected in filter paper (F1-F2) =W3

Calculation

The percentage of bitumen = (W1-(W2+W3)/W1) x 100
