In this experiment, entitled "A Broken Pencil," the materials needed are a pencil, transparent glass,
and water. In this take-home experiment, I have learned that the pencil shows different effects
relevant to its position. Upon conducting this experiment, the first phenomenon I noticed was the
increase in the pencil's size once the other (half) portion was submerged in water. Second, I observed
that the pencil only appears bent or broken when it is leaned to one side. Once the pencil leans more
and more, it will look completely snapped in the middle. Third, once the pencil was placed towards
one end of the glass, it completely looked broken across the top. So, how do these phenomena occur?
These cases occur due to the refraction of light. Light bends when it travels from one material to
another or one medium to another. As the light hits the pencil, it bends or refracts around the pencil
causing it to look like it is bent in the water. More so, light has more speed in the air than water
because light waves are electromagnetic transverse waves. They can travel through a vacuum, and
any particles they contact slow them down.
