Q3W1 Quadratic Functions

This document outlines the objectives and properties of quadratic functions for Grade 8 mathematics, including the general form, graphing techniques, and key characteristics such as concavity, vertex, and intercepts. It explains the domain and range of quadratic functions and provides a definition of a quadratic function as a specific type of polynomial. The document also emphasizes the importance of the vertical line test in determining whether a graph represents a function.

Quadratic

Functions
Grade 8 | Mathematics 2
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
● define quadratic function in general form: 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐;
● graph a quadratic function by using set of ordered pairs or table
of values;
● determine the concavity, vertex, axis of symmetry, and intercepts
of the parabola representing a quadratic function;
● sketch the graph of a quadratic function using its vertex and
intercepts; and
● state the domain and range of quadratic functions.
Definition
A quadratic function 𝑓 is a function that
can be written in the form
𝒇 𝒙 = 𝒂𝒙𝟐 + 𝒃𝒙 + 𝒄, 𝑎 ≠ 0
and 𝑎, 𝑏, and 𝑐 are real numbers.

Note: The graph of a quadratic function is called a parabola.

Domain and Range
• The domain of a function is a set
containing all the first coordinates

given function.
• Meanwhile, the range of a function

ordinate) of the given function.
