Ass-I (MTH-411)

This document is an assignment for the 7th semester Mathematics course on Modeling & Simulation at the University of Chakwal, worth 5% of sessional marks. It includes problems on growth and decay with continuous compounding interest, an RC-Series Circuit, Newton's Law of Cooling/Warming, and a mixture problem involving a tank with saltwater. Students are instructed to show full working in their solutions, as marks will be deducted for incomplete or poorly presented work.

Assignment-I
7th Semester
Course: Modeling & Simulation (MTH-411)

Instructions:
 This Assignment is worth 5% of your Sessional marks.
 Full working must be shown in your solutions.
 Marks will be deducted for incomplete working, insufficient justification of steps, incorrect
mathematical notation and for messy presentation of solutions.

Q. No. Description
CLO: 1, 2 Domain: C1, C2

 Growth and Decay:

1. When interest is compounded continuously, the amount of money increases at a rate
𝑑𝑆
proportional to the amount S present at a time t, that is, 𝑑𝑡 = 𝑟𝑆, where r is the annual rate
of interest.
a) Find the amount of money accrued at the end of 5 years when $5000 is deposited
3
in the savings account drawing 5 4 % annual interest compounded continuously.
b) In how many years will the initial sum deposited have doubled?
c) Use a calculator to compare the amount obtained in part (a) with the amount 𝑆 =
5(4)
1
5000 (1 + (0.0575)) that is accrued when interest is compounded quarterly.
4

 Series Circuit:
Q 2. Suppose an RC-Series Circuit has a variable resistor. If the resistance at the time t is given
𝑑𝑞 1
by 𝑅 = 𝑘1 + 𝑘2 𝑡, where 𝑘1 and 𝑘2 are known positive constants, then 𝑅 𝑑𝑡 + 𝐶 𝑞 = 𝐸(𝑡)
becomes
𝑑𝑞 1
(𝑘1 + 𝑘2 𝑡) + 𝑞 = 𝐸(𝑡)
𝑑𝑡 𝐶
If 𝐸(𝑡) = 𝐸0 and 𝑞(0) = 𝑞0 , Where 𝐸0 and 𝑞0 are constants, show that
1
𝑘1 𝐶𝑘2
𝑞(𝑡) = 𝐸0 𝐶 + (𝑞0 − 𝐸0 𝐶) ( )
𝑘1 + 𝑘2 𝑡

 Newton Law of Cooling/Warming:

𝑑𝑇
3. The ambient temperature 𝑇𝑚 in 𝑑𝑡 = 𝑘(𝑇 − 𝑇𝑚 ) could be a function of time t. Suppose that
in an artificially controlled environment, 𝑇𝑚 (𝑡) is periodic with a 24-hour period, as
illustrated in Figure. Devise a mathematical model for the temperature 𝑇(𝑡) of a body
within this environment.
 Mixture:
4. Suppose that a large mixing tank initially holds 300 gallons of water is which 50 pounds of
salt have been dissolved. Another brine solution is pumped into the tank at a rate of 3
gal/min, and when the solution is well stirred, it is then pumped out at a slower rate of 2
gal/min. If the concentration of the solution entering is 2 lb/gal, determine a differential
equation for the amount of salt A(t) in the tank at time t > 0.
