1. Two point charges qA = 3 microC and qB = – 3 microC are located 20 cm apart in vacuum.
(a) What is the electric field at the midpoint O of the line AB joining the two charges
(b) If a negative test charge of magnitude 1.5 * 10–9 C is placed at this point, what is the force
experienced by the test charge ?
2. A system has two charges qA = 2.5 * 10–7 C and qB = – 2.5 ´*10–7 C located at points A : (0, 0,
–15 cm) and B : (0, 0, + 15 cm), respectively. What are the total charge and electric dipole
moment of the system.
3. (a) Obtain the expression of electric field by a plane of infinite size and with uniform charge
distribution.
(b) Two large, thin metal plates are parallel and close to each other. On their inner faces, the
plates have surface charge densities of opposite signs and of magnitude 17.0 *10 –22 C/m2.
What is E :
(1) in the outer region of the first plate,
(2) in the outer region of the second plate, and
(3) between the plates ?
4. (a) Obtain the expression of torque acting on electric dipole in uniform external electric field.
(b) Derive equation of potential energy of an electric dipole in a uniform electric field.
5. A radio can tune in to any station in the 7.5 MHz to 12 MHz band. What is the corresponding
wavelength band ?
6. (1) (a) Obtain the expression for the magnetic energy stored in a solenoid in terms of
magnetic field B, area A and length l of the solenoid. (b) How does this magnetic energy
compare with the electrostatic energy stored in a capacitor ?
(2) Two concentric circular coils, one of small radius r1 and the other of large radius r2, such
that r1 << r2, are placed co-axially with centres coinciding. Obtain the mutual inductance of
the arrangement
7. A long solenoid with 15 turns per cm has a small loop of area 2.0 cm2 placed inside the
solenoid normal to its axis. If the current carried by the solenoid changes steadily from 2.0
A to 4.0 A in 0.1 s, what is the induced emf in the loop while the current is changing ?
8. Obtain R = 2f for mirror.
9. Monochromatic light of frequency 6.0 * 1014 Hz is produced by a laser. The power emitted
is 2.0 *10–3 W. (a) What is the energy of a photon in the light beam ? (b) How many photons
per second, on an average, are emitted by the source ?
10. What is the de-Broglie wavelength associated with (a) an electron moving with a speed of
5.4 * 106 m/s, and (b) a ball of mass 150 g travelling at 30.0 m/s ?
11. Light of wavelength 488 nm is produced by an argon laser which is used in the photoelectric
effect. When light from this spectral line is incident on the emitter, the stopping (cutoff)
potential of photoelectrons is 0.38 V. Find the work function of the material from which the
emitter is made.
12. In a Geiger-Marsden experiment, what is the distance of closest approach to the nucleus of
a 7.7 MeV a-particle before it comes momentarily to rest and reverses its direction ?

13. Apply Biot-Savart law to find the magnetic field due to a circular current carrying loop at a
point on the axis of the loop.
14. Derive equation of magnetic field inside a long straight solenoid.
15. Explain the superposition principle for static electric forces and write its general equation.
16. (a) What is series connection of cell ? Derive equation of equivalent emf of two cells with
emf e1 and e2 connected in series.
(b) What is parallel connection of cell ? Obtain equation of equivalent emf of two cells
connected in parallel.
17. (a) A short bar magnet placed with its axis at 30° with a uniform external magnetic field of
0.25 T experiences a torque of magnitude equal to 4.5 * 10–2 J. What is the magnitude of
magnetic moment of the magnet ?
(b) A short bar magnet of magnetic moment m = 0.32 JT–1 is placed in a uniform magnetic
field of 0.15 T. If the bar is free to rotate in the plane of the field, which orientation would
correspond to its :
(1) stable, and
(2) unstable equilibrium ? What is the potential energy of the magnet in each case ?
18. Find the
(a) maximum frequency, and
(b) minimum wavelength of X-rays produced by 30 kV electrons.
19. A short bar magnet has a magnetic moment of 0.48 J T–1. Give the direction and magnitude
of the magnetic field produced by the magnet at a distance of 10 cm from the centre of the
magnet on
(a) the axis
(b) the equatorial lines (normal bisector) of the magnet
20. Explain Total Internal Refection.
21. Determine the current in each branch of the network shown in figure
22. (a) Two charges 5 * 10–8 C and – 3 * 10–8 C are located 16 cm apart. At what point(s) on the
line joining the two charges is the electric potential zero ? Take the potential at infinity to be
zero
(b) In a parallel plate capacitor with air between the plates each plate has an area of 6*10–3
m2 and the distance between the plates is 3 mm. Calculate the capacitance of the capacitor.
If this capacitor is connected to a 100 V supply, what is the charge on each plate of the
capacitor ?
23. Figure shows a series LCR circuit connected to a variable frequency 230 V source. L = 5.0 H,
C = 80 mF, R = 40 W
(a) Determine the source frequency which drives the circuit in resonance.
(b) Obtain the impedance of the circuit and the amplitude of current at the resonating
frequency.
(c) Determine the rms potential drops across the three elements of the circuit. Show that
the potential drop across the LC combination is zero at the resonating frequency.
24. Explain A.C Circuit with only capacitor and Inductor with power .
25. Obtain the expression of electric field by thin spherical shell with uniform charge
distribution at a point outside it.
26. Find the position of the image formed by the lens combination given in the figure.
27. Obtain the equation of electric field at a point by system of ‘n’ point charges.
