The Development of A Web-Based Library Management System
The Development of A Web-Based Library Management System
INTRODUCTION
Advances in information technology have enabled businesses to depart from the traditional way
of doing things, and without a proper flow of information in any corporate enterprise, the entire
enterprise's operations would be threatened. The use of information systems has enabled
organizations to generate more accurate and focused information about consumers, markets,
suppliers, and competitors in order to improve the business's decision-making capabilities.
There are various benefits of using information technology in corporate operations, including
higher operational efficiencies, better decision-making, better customer service, increased
productivity, competitive advantage, improved profitability, and easier management of business
processes. This can assist decision-makers in evaluating different ideas and selecting the best
action for their organizations, allowing them to connect more effectively with their clients and
consumers and respond to their demands and services sooner.
In conclusion, the use of information systems in business operations has become critical for
companies to remain competitive and efficient. Information systems provide benefits such as
efficiency, accuracy, competitive advantage, improved interaction and decision-making.
Municipal Mayor Elpidio F. Barzaga Jr. led the city to first-class status in 1998.
Dasmarinas was designated as a city in 2009. In the midst of changes, the Dasmarinas Local
Government has always prioritized education as a critical determinant for progress. The
population has increased from 300,000 in the late 1990s to close to 7000,000 as migrant
residents flow into the municipality. The local government perceived a need to boost education
and research quality among Dasmareno students.
Among the major issues identified was the lack of a conducive research environment for the
majority of public elementary and high school pupils. They have relatively restricted access to
school libraries' resources. Periodicals, encyclopedias, western literature, Filipino reference
materials, and multimedia, for example, are in short supply. In order to stay up with the pace of
information technology, students must also gain computer literacy skills. However, not all
schools, particularly public schools, have adequate resources to provide them with practical
knowledge and abilities.
Dasmarinas Public Library was conceived of in 2004. The three-story, fully air-conditioned
structure was completed in 2006 as a result of a collaboration between the Municipal
Government of Dasmarinas, then led by Mayor Elpidio F. Barzaga Jr., and the Rotary Club
International, as represented by Lewis/ Auburn Rotary Club District 7790. Gary E. Kennedy,
ME, USA, and the Rotary Club of Dasmarinas. The Pambayang Aklatan ng Dasmarinas, as it
was originally known, saw its groundbreaking on February 6, 2004, with construction and design
aided by Architect Robert N. Hapin of the Office of the Municipal Engineer.
The soft opening of the City Library in November 2006 allowed surrounding public school pupils
to do research and study. It makes use of a Computerized Integrated Documentation System, a
UNESCO-developed computer software, to make research simple and systematic.
After the municipality was elevated to the level of city in January 2010, its name was changed to
Aklatang Panlungsod ng Dasmarinas (APD). Its full implementation is fully endorsed by current
City Mayor Atty. Barzaga, Elpidio F. Jr.
Organizational Chart

Figure 1. Illustrates the library's hierarchical structure and reporting links. The diagram
explains the various locations and how they are related to and interconnected with one another.
Key administrative and departmental positions are usually included. The chart may show the
hierarchy of reporting from library personnel to department heads, library directors, and other
administration roles. It shows how various library units and departments are arranged and how
they interact within the library system. The library director, library manager, or administrative
officer plays a critical role in directing the library's operations, strategic planning, staff
administration, budgeting, community participation, and general library management. Their
leadership and managerial abilities are critical for the library's efficient operation and continuing
improvement as an institution. While other employees, such as IT support, operate and handle
all technological matters. Library assistants also support the in-charge office to make the
position easier, and the work will be split by the library personnel. At last, Facility Workers are
responsible for keeping the facility looking nice and tidy on a daily basis. It helps to focus and
makes the facility more approachable.
Business Processes
Process libraries, which are databases of documents, work instructions, and processes,
are beneficial to libraries. Standardizing procedures, increasing productivity, and preserving
information can all be aided by a process library. It can also offer a way to learn about and
comprehend the firm and what it takes to operate it, which is crucial for success. Managing the
operations and services of libraries requires the use of business procedures. Process mapping,
process libraries, and business process modeling techniques are tools that libraries can employ
to increase the efficacy and efficiency of these procedures. Libraries can uncover inefficiencies
and areas for improvement, optimize efficiency, standardize procedures, and preserve
knowledge with the use of these technologies.
● Manual Library: Due to the manual nature of their operations, libraries face various
obstacles, including a shortage of space, ineffective staff, poor administration, and time-
consuming duties such as inventory management and tracking in-house use of library
resources. Traditional library management entails a massive quantity of paperwork, is
labor-intensive, and requires substantial human effort, resulting in high operational costs
and inefficiencies. Furthermore, keeping and conserving historical records and materials
is a time-consuming and laborious process.
● Library card: Paper-based library cards are utilized by students who enter the library as
their record. This contained both the information and books that they utilized.
●
Solution:
● Computerized Library: A computerized library management system (LMS) must be
implemented. An LMS attempts to automate all library activities, including managing the
basic responsibilities of library management, arranging, handling, and maintaining
records of books and members in a thorough and systematic manner. An online library
management system is a practical answer to the traditional library system's existing
challenges, giving a user-friendly interface application for librarians to administer library
operations conveniently and efficiently. The technology contributes to lower operational
expenses, staffing requirements, and stationery requirements, resulting in lower
operational costs and better efficiency and accuracy. A library management system's
features include automating tasks such as tracking the number of books in the library,
retaining records of new books, borrowed books and returned books. The LMS is user-
friendly, faster in operation, and easier to maintain than the manual system since it
digitizes and automates the traditional means of managing library work, giving greater
security and a single database for managing the complete library data. The suggested
system aims to transform traditional library operations by providing a more efficient and
technologically sophisticated way to managing library resources.
● Library account can also grant access to digital resources such as e-books, audiobooks,
and databases, which can be borrowed and accessed remotely. This can assist address
the issue of restricted availability because patrons can access content from anyplace
with an internet connection.
