Installing an Ubuntu on VirtualBox (step-by-step)

Step 1: Download VirtualBox

• Visit the official VirtualBox website: https://www.virtualbox.org/

• Click on the "Download" button.

• Select the appropriate version for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux). In
this case, this is a Windows 10 OS, So I will choose the “Windows hosts” to download.

• Download the installer and run it.

• Press the “Yes” button to run the installer.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install VirtualBox.

Step 2: Download the Ubuntu ISO Image

• Visit the official Ubuntu website: https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop


• Click on the "Download 24.04.1" button to start the download.
Note: This is the Current Version of Ubuntu as of it’s making of this Tutorial.

Wait for the Ubuntu ISO to Download Complete.

Step 3: Create a New Virtual Machine •

Open VirtualBox.

Click on the "New" button.

• Enter a name for your virtual machine.

Select the desired operating system select ‘Linux’, Subtype ‘Ubuntu’, and Version
‘Ubuntu (64-bit)’.

• Click the ‘Hardware’ tab to adjust the memory allocation and Processors for your
virtual machine. Note: Drag only on the Green Area for the Optimal Performance of the Virtual Machine.

Click the ‘Hard Disk’ tab to adjust the Disk Size for your virtual machine.
Note: Set the Disk Size for at least 25GB for the Optimal Performance of the Virtual Machine.

• Click on "Finish" button to create the Virtual Machine.

Step 5: Mount the ISO Image and Adjust the Video Memory •

Click on the "Settings" button.

Click on the "Display" Tab and set the Video Memory to ‘128 MB’ and turn on the ‘3D
Acceleration’.

• Click on the "Storage" Tab and click on Disc Icon and click on another Disc Icon
(Upper Right Side) to Choose a Disk Options, then select “Choose a Disk File…” to
Load the Ubuntu ISO that you Downloaded Earlier.

Click the Downloaded Ubuntu ISO.

• Select the Downloaded Ubuntu ISO and Click the ‘Open’ button.

Click the OK button.

Step 6: Start the Virtual Machine

• Select the virtual machine you created and click on the "Start" button.

Wait for the Virtual Machine to Start-up and to completely load the Ubuntu ISO on
Virtual Machine.

• Press ‘Enter’ to Start the Ubuntu OS.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install Ubuntu.

Once you see this Splash Screen, press the “Restart now” to finish the installation.

• Once you see this Boot Screen, press ‘Enter’ to Restart the Virtual Machine and to Eject
the Ubuntu ISO File.

• Once the Virtual Machine restarted, you can start using your Ubuntu virtual machine.

Step 6: Install the Drivers for Ubuntu on VirtualBox (Optional)

• On VirtualBox, Select the “Devices” tab and click the ‘Insert Guest Additions CD image…’
to Insert a Drivers CD.

• On Ubuntu, Click the Right Button on your Mouse and Select ‘Open in Terminal’ to open
Terminal.

Then type this on terminal “sudo apt install bzip2 -y” and type your Password and wait
for the installation to completed. Then you can now close the Terminal.

• Then click the Disc Icon (on the Left Side) and Click “Run Software” to run the Drivers
Installation. Then Click ‘Run’ to Fully Run the Drivers Installation.

• Type your Password to Extract the Drivers for the Installation and Click ‘Authenticate’ to
continue.

• When you see this on the Terminal. Please ‘Enter’ to Close the terminal, then you can
now close the ‘Files App’. And lastly Right Click on the Disc Icon and select ‘Eject’ to
Eject the Installation CD. And you can now Run Ubuntu in Fully Optimized.
