Using a number line:

Steps:
1. Look at the sign right before the SECOND
integer
2. If (+) → move to the right
If (-) → move to the left
3. Starting point is the FIRST integer
Example:
RIGHT
Starting
Point
-4 + 5 =

5 spaces to the right

-10 -9 -8 -7 -6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

Answer = 1
Using a mental method

Steps:
1. Check if signs are same or different and
write and note of that
2. If different →
1. Find absolute values of both integers
2. Highlight bigger absolute value
3. Calculate bigger absolute value - smaller
absolute value
4. Use sign of bigger
If same →
1. Find absolute values of both integers
2. Add both absolute values
3. Use sign of both integers
Note :
Absolute value is integer WITHOUT THE
SIGN

Example: 1 Bigger
3 6

3 + (-6) Different

6 - 3 = _3

Answer = -3
Example: 1
7 9

-7 + (-9) Same

7 + 9= _16

Answer = -16
