Class work problems on fluid kinematics – 2025

1. A flow field is described by the equation Ψ = y – x2. Sketch the streamline Ψ = 0.

(i) Derive an expression for velocity at any point in the flow field.
(ii) Find the vorticity of the flow.

2. A stream function is given by Ψ = 5x – 6y. Calculate the velocity components and also
magnitude and direction of the resultant velocity at any point.

3. A fluid flow is given by - Vr = (1 − ) cos 𝜃 & V𝜃 = - (1 + ) sin 𝜃.

(i) Show that it represents a physically possible flow.

(ii) Determine whether the flow is rotational or irrotational.

4. The stream lines are represented by ψ = x2 - y2. (i) Determine the velocity and its direction at
(2,2). (ii) Sketch the streamlines and show the direction of flow.

5. A two dimensional flow field is given by u = 2y2; v = 3x. Find the acceleration at point A (-2, 4).

6. Does the velocity potential, Φ = y + x2 – y2 represent possible flow? If so determine the stream
function and plot the streamline Ψ = 1.

7. A flow has a velocity potential function is given by Φ = x3 – 3xy2. Verify whether it represents a
valid flow field. If it is does then determine the stream function and calculate the velocity and
pressure at (1, -3) given that the pressure at (4, 1) is 14.5 kPa and the fluid is water.

8. Steady incompressible flow consist of following velocity components: u = - cx/y, v = c ln(xy).

Obtain a relevant stream function for the fluid flow.

9. Following is the velocity potential function for two dimensional irrotational flow in cylindrical

coordinates:   . Determine the conjugate function (stream function)
