1. What is an Adverb Clause?


An adverb clause (or adverbial clause) is a dependent clause that functions as an adverb. It
modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb and begins with a subordinating conjunction
(e.g., because, although, if, when, while).

2. Characteristics of an Adverb Clause


• It has a subject and a verb.
• It answers questions like When? Where? Why? How? To what extent? Under what
condition?
• It is dependent and cannot stand alone as a complete sentence.

3. Types of Adverb Clauses

Time Clauses (When?)


Common Conjunctions: when, while, before, after, since, as soon as, until
Example: Example: I will call you when I arrive.

Reason Clauses (Why?)


Common Conjunctions: because, since, as
Example: Example: He stayed home because he was sick.

Condition Clauses (Under what condition?)


Common Conjunctions: if, unless, provided that, as long as
Example: Example: If you study, you will pass the exam.

Contrast Clauses (Unexpected results)


Common Conjunctions: although, even though, whereas, while
Example: Example: Although it was cold, she went for a swim.

Purpose Clauses (For what purpose?)

Result Clauses (What happened as a result?)

Manner Clauses (How?)

Place Clauses (Where?)
Common Conjunctions: where, wherever

4. Word Order Rules


• If the adverb clause comes first, use a comma.
• If the main clause comes first, no comma is needed.
Example: Because she was tired, she went to bed early.
Example: She went to bed early because she was tired.
