STATISTICS 221
TEST 1
Date: 18th March 2024

QUESTION 1
A leading statistical consultancy asks you to carry out a survey to count the number of sugar
cane stalks from farms in the Durban coastline. Identify the target population, sampling units
and sampling frame. Mention any shortcomings with the sampling frame. [5]

QUESTION 2
A leading electrical company, SUPERELECTRIC wants to estimate the total number of light
bulbs sold per day from their different branches. They sample 16 companies out of a total of
2600 companies and record the number of lightbulbs sold per day in each company:
24 17 23 18 49 72 35 31 26 29 24 22
37 28 43 21
a) What is the average number of lightbulbs sold per day and give a standard error for
your estimate? [5]
b) What is the total number of lightbulbs sold per day and provide a 95% confidence
interval for your estimate? [5]
c) Work out an estimate of the proportion of companies that have sold more than 30
lightbulbs per day and provide a standard error of your estimate. [5]
d) What sample size should be drawn in order to estimate the total number of lightbulbs
old per day with a tolerance of d=9 and with 95% confidence? [5]
e) What tolerance level should be chosen to achieve a sample size of 90 in order to
estimate the population mean number of lightbulbs sold per day with 95%
confidence? [5]

QUESTION 3 (3 marks each)

PLEASE ANSWER TRUE OR FALSE TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS
a) Simple random sampling is susceptible to selection bias, especially when the
population is highly heterogeneous.
b) Accessibility sampling is more suitable for qualitative research studies where in-depth
understanding of the experiences of specific groups is required
c) Quota sampling, if meticulously executed, can mitigate biases associated with unequal
population distributions, yet it necessitates a profound understanding of the
population's heterogeneity to set accurate quotas.
d) In simple random sampling, increasing the sample size beyond a certain point yields
diminishing returns in terms of reducing sampling variability, as the standard error of
the estimate approaches the population standard deviation asymptotically.
e) In simple random sampling, the efficiency of estimation can be enhanced by
employing accessibility sampling methods, where sample units are selected at regular
intervals from a randomly ordered list of the population, reducing sampling variability
while maintaining simplicity.
