KBANG Lesson 2: 네 / 아니요 / 맞아요

네 / 아니요 – Yes / No

네 and 아니요 are the most common answers in Korean they are both 존댓말. But often, 네 and 아니요
are used to express agreement and disagreement.

• 네 – yes (also: I agree)

• 아니요 – no (also: I disagree)

For example, if someone asks you if don’t you like coffee, and you don’t like coffee, your answer must
include ‘네’ because you agree with the statement/question that you do not like coffee.

SAMPLE CONVERSATION:

희주: 커피 좋아해요? – Do you like coffee?

태호: 네, 좋아해요. – Yes, I like it.
아니요, 안 좋아해요. – No, I don’t like it.

희주: 커피 안 좋아해요? – You don’t like coffee?

태호: 네, 안 좋아해요. – Yes, I don’t like coffee.
아니요, 좋아해요. – No, I like it.

안 – negates a verb in a simple way

네 in Korean can also become a question and mean something similar to ‘what’. If you ask ‘네?’ in
Korean, you are asking something similar to ‘pardon?’

Example:

희주: 커피 안 좋아해요? – You don’t like coffee?

태호: 네? – What? / Pardon?
희주: 커피 안 좋아해요? – Do you not like coffee?
태호: 아니요, 좋아해요. – No, I like it.

맞아요 – Right

• 맞아요 – that’s right/correct

This expressions comes from the verb 맞다, which means to be right/correct. It can be used as a
question and a statement – it is also a form of letting the speaker know you’re actively listening.
