CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION OF SIWES

The students industrial work scheme (SIWES) in the higher institution is

a skill training program design to expose and prepare students for the industrial
work situation they are likely to meet after graduation. The duration of the
programme is four months which is included in curriculum of THE FEDERAL
POLYTECHNIC ADO EKITI in the second year, first semester. The
programme also carries a number of credits units in the polytechnic curriculum.
The scheme affords students the opportunity of familiarizing and exposing
themselves to the needed experience in handling equipment and machinery that
are usually not available in their institutions.

Before the establishment of the scheme, there was a growing concern

among industrialist that graduates of institutions of higher learning lacked
adequate practical background studies preparatory for employment in industries.
Thus, the employers were of the opinion that the theoretical education going on
in the higher institutions was not responsive to the needs of the employers of
labour.

It is against this background that the rationale for initiating and designing
the scheme by fund during its formative years 1973/1974 was introduced to
acquaint student with the skills of handling employer’s equipment and
machinery.

The ITF solely funded the scheme during its formative years. But as the
financial involvement became unbearable to the fund, it withdrew from the
scheme in 1978. The Federal Government handed over the scheme in 1979 to
both National University Commission (NUC) and National Board for Technical
Education (NBTE). Later the Federal Government in November 1984 reverted
to the management and implementation of the SIWES program to ITF and it

6
was effectively taken over by Industrial Training Funds (ITF) in July 1985 with
the funding being solely borne by the Federal Government.

1.1 OBJECTIVES OF SIWES

Specifically, the objectives of student’s industrial work experience scheme are

to:

1. Provide an avenue for students in the Nigerian higher institution to

acquire industrial skills and experience in their course of study.

2. Prepare students for the work situation they are likely to meet after
graduation.

3. Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment

and machinery that may not be available in the polytechnic.

4. Make the transition from the polytechnic to the field of work easier and
thus enhance students contact for later job placement.

5. Provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge

with practical work thereby bridging the gap between higher institution
work and actual practice.

6. Getting students acquainted to different industrial work methods and that

may not be available in higher institution.

CHAPTER TWO
2.0 INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER
Different Computer Components
I was introduced to different computer component such as Monitor, Keyboard,
Central Processing Unit (CPU), Mouse, Printer etc. and how such component
can be connected and functions properly while using the computer system. I
was also introduced to different computer packages like; Microsoft Word,
Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Microsoft Publisher, CorelDraw. I was exposed
to different browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera Mini,
internet explorer, UC browser etc. these browsers can be used to assess internet
while working online.
2.1 Microsoft Word
I was introduced to Microsoft word and its formatting features that will enable
me accomplish a task assigned to me.
A computer is an electronic machine that processes raw data to give
information as output. An electronic device that accepts data as input, and
transforms it under the influence of a set of special instructions called Programs,
to produce the desired output (referred to as Information).

2.2 COMPONENT OF COMPUTER

Every computer system has the following three basic components:

i. Input unit

9
ii. Central processing unit
iii. Output unit

I. Input Unit

These components help users enter data and commands into a computer system.
Data can be in the form of numbers, words, actions, commands, etc. The main
function of input devices is to direct commands and data into computers.
Computers then use their CPU to process this data and produce output.

II. Central Processing Unit (CPU)

After receiving data and commands from users, a computer system now has to
process it according to the instructions provided. Here, it has to rely on a
component called the central processing unit.

The CPU further uses these three elements:

a. Memory Unit

b. Arithmetic and Logic Unit

c. Control Unit
III. Output Unit
The third and final component of a computer system is the output unit. After
processing of data, it is converted into a format which humans can understand.
After conversion, the output units displays this data to users. Examples of output
devices include monitors, screens, printers and speakers. Thus, output units
basically reproduce the data formatted by the computer for users’ benefit.
2.3 CPU (Central Processing Unit)
CPU or Central Processing Unit is a processor which helps the computer to
executes the data and instructions for the user. It processes all the data and
instruction is received through the software or hardware which is running on the
computer. The CPU contains the circulatory which is needed to process and
executes the results. It is known as the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and is

10
also known as the Central Processor which is place on a motherboard. That’s
why it is the most important component for a computer and also we know the
CPU as the brain of the computer.
2.4 Types of Central Processing Unit (CPU)
i. Single Core CPU
The oldest type of computer CPU available is single-core CPUs, and this was
initially the only CPU type that could be used on computers.
Single-core CPUs can only start one task at a time, so multitasking wasn’t very
successful.
This means output declines were noticeable every time more than one
application was running. It is the oldest CPU type available and employed in
most personal and official computers. The single-core CPU can execute only
one command at a time, and it’s not efficient in multi-tasking. It signifies a
markable declination in performance if more than a single application is
executed. If one operation is started, the second process should wait until the
first one is finished. But if it is fed with multiple operations, the computer’s
performance is drastically reduced. The performance of a single-core CPU is
based on its clock speed by measuring its power.
ii. Dual-core CPU
It is a single CPU that comprises two strong cores and functions like a dual
CPU acting like one. Unlike CPUs with a single core, processors with dual-core
must switch back and forth within a variable array of data streams. When more
threads execute, the dual-core CPU effectively manages to multitask. To utilize
the dual-core CPU effectively, the running programs and operating system
should have a unique code called simultaneous multi-threading technology
embedded in it. Dual-core CPU is more rapid than a single-core, but it is not
robust as a quad-core CPU.
iii. Quad-core CPU
The quad-core CPU is a refined model of multiple-core CPU features and
design with four cores on a single CPU. Like a dual-core CPU, which divides

11
the workload between the cores, quad-core enables effective multitasking. It
doesn’t signify any operation that is four times faster than others. Unless the
applications and program executed on it by SMT code will fasten the speed and
becomes unnoticeable. People who must execute multiple programs
simultaneously, such as gamers, use CPUs with multiple cores. The series of
Supreme Commander is optimized for multiple-core CPUs.
2.5 Installing of Software
I was taught how to install software on computer and the function of the
software on the system.
2.6 INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT WORD
This is a basic computer workshop. Microsoft Word is a word processing
program. We use it to create documents such as letters and reports. In this
workshop, we will learn the parts of the window; create and format documents.
