UNIT 5: WE’VE GOT ENGLISH!


PERIOD 2: SONG + PHONICS
I/ Objectives:
After the lesson, Ss are able to:
- Identify rooms and areas in a school
- Pronounce and differentiate sounds made by the letter combinations dr, tr, and cr.
II/ Procedures: (90 mins)
Part Teacher's activities
1/ Warm-up
- Greeting
(5 mins)
2/ Lesson 1: 1. Lead–in
Vocabulary - Ask Ss to stand at their desks. Hold up a flashcard from the vocabulary set, T
(20 mins) says a word. If the word is the same as the flashcard, they jump. If it isn’t, they
keep still. Start slowly then faster until Ss find it hard to keep up.
- Ask Ss “How many rooms does your school have?”, “What are they?”
2. Presentation
Use flashcards to elicit the new vocabulary, model new words, explain the
meanings, and write them on board (hold flashcards up one at a time first
then hold them up in a different order for Ss to revise).
3. Practice
Controlled activities:
Listen, point and repeat
- Ask Ss to open their class books and look at the pictures and words.
- Play the recording for Ss to listen, point and repeat.
- Ask individual Ss to say the words for the class.
Guided activities:
- Activity 1: Describe it! Divide the class into two teams, each team member
takes turn being a describer. T secretly gives the describer a word to describe
without saying the word. The first group to guess the corect word gets a
point. The winner is the team with the most points at the end of the game.
- Activity 2: Who has the best memory? Let Ss revise all new words. The first
student says randomly a word. The student sitting next to repeats the word
and say a new word. The next student continues repeating two words in the
same order and say one more new word. Keep going until they say the word
in wrong order or cannot recall the word.

Song 1. Pre–teach
(20 mins) Lead – in:
- Point at the picture and ask Ss:
+ “How are they?”
+ “What are they doing?”
+ “Where are they?”
+”Which subject are they learning?”
- Ask Ss to predict what the song is about.
2. Teach:
- Ask Ss to listen and point along the lyrics.
- Listen again and underline new words, explain them (write on the board),
invite Ss to make a sentence with the words.
- T reads each line aloud for Ss to read.
- Play the song and let Ss sing along line by line.
- Perform with actions.
3. Post–teach:
Check understanding:
- Ask Ss comprehension questions to check their understanding (call 2 Ss come
up to the board, put the bell in the middle, ask Ss to tap the bell if they know
the answer).
+ Which subjects are mentioned?
+ Where do they have PE/art/computers? …
Further activities:
- Order the lyrics.
Discussion:
+ Divide the class into 2 teams, each team will take turns to sing the song.
Break Time (5 mins)
3/ Lesson 2: 1. Listen, point and repeat
Phonics 1.1Lead-in
(35mins) - Play again the second recording in the phonics lesson unit 1 (p.11) for Ss to
revise the sounds.
- Ask Ss to revise the sound made by 4 letter d, t, c, r (e.g. letter d makes the
sound…)
- Ask Ss to look at the pictures and say what is in the picture.
1.2Presentation
- T holds up the phonics card and says “Letters … and … make the sound…”
- T writes the combination on the board and let Ss trace in the air.
- T says aloud the sound and asks Ss to repeat.
1.3Practice:
Controlled activities:
- Play the recording first for Ss to listen and point.
- Play the recording again for Ss to listen and repeat.

Guided activities: Eyes, noses, lips!


- Ss stand up. T says a list of words. If Ss hear the /dr/ sounds, they have to put
their hands on their eyes, the /tr/ sounds, they have to put their hands on
their noses, the /cr/ sounds, they have to put their hands on their lips. Start
slowly then speed up until Ss find it hard to keep up.
2 Listen and chant
2.1Pre-teach:
- Ask Ss what they can see from the picture.
- Ask Ss if there are any new words, model the words, drill pronunciation and
explain the meanings.
2.2Teach a chant:
- Play the recording for Ss to listen to the chant once through. T reads each line
aloud for Ss to read.
- Play the chant the second time for Ss to chant sentence by sentence.
- T says Team 1, Team 2,…chant.
2.3Post-teach:
Check understanding:
- Ask Ss comprehension questions to check their understanding:
+ “How many things does the boy draw?”
+ “What are they?”

Further activities:
- On three separate sheets on paper, write the letter combinations dr, tr, and cr
in large letters. Stick these around the classroom, so everyone can see them.
- Play the chant again. When Ss hear a word starting with one of the sounds, Ss
have to point to the correct letters.
- Do exercise 3,4.
Wrap-up - Play game to revise new words and sound:
(5 mins) + Divide the class into three teams, each team makes a line opposite the board. T
sets a time limit. Each member from each team has to run to and write down one
word that contains one of three sounds /dr/, /tr/, and /cr/. The winner will be
the team with the most correct words.
- Assign HW
- Say goodbye
