Protein Synthesis Problem

The document outlines the processes of DNA replication, transcription, and translation. It provides the complementary DNA strand, the resulting mRNA sequence, and the corresponding amino acid sequence derived from the mRNA codons. The final protein sequence is a polypeptide chain that includes Methionine, Arginine, Tyrosine, and others, with translation terminating at the stop codon UAA.

GIVEN: 5'- ATG CGT TAC GGA TGC CTT AAG GCT TAC CGG ATC GGA TAA

CGT TGC TGA -3'

Step 1: Replication (DNA → DNA)

Replication produces a complementary DNA strand. Since DNA replication follows base-pairing rules (A with
T, C with G), the complementary strand will be:

Template Strand (Given):

5'- ATG CGT TAC GGA TGC CTT AAG GCT TAC CGG ATC GGA TAA CGT TGC TGA -3'

Newly Synthesized Complementary DNA Strand:

3'- TAC GCA ATG CCT ACG GAA TTC CGA ATG GCC TAG CCT ATT GCA ACG ACT -5'

Step 2: Transcription (DNA → mRNA)

Transcription converts the DNA sequence into mRNA. In RNA, T (Thymine) is replaced with U (Uracil), and
the strand is complementary to the template strand (which is the 3'→5' strand from replication).

mRNA Strand:

5'- AUG CGU UAC GGA UGC CUU AAG GCU UAC CGG AUC GGA UAA CGU UGC UGA -3'

Step 3: Translation (mRNA → Protein)

Translation occurs in codons (triplets of bases), each coding for an amino acid. Using the genetic code, we
decode the mRNA sequence into a polypeptide chain.

Breaking mRNA into Codons:

AUG | CGU | UAC | GGA | UGC | CUU | AAG | GCU | UAC | CGG | AUC | GGA | UAA | CGU | UGC |
UGA

Translation Using the Genetic Code:

Codon Amino Acid

AUG Methionine (Start)
CGU Arginine
UAC Tyrosine
GGA Glycine
UGC Cysteine
CUU Leucine
AAG Lysine
GCU Alanine
UAC Tyrosine
Codon Amino Acid
CGG Arginine
AUC Isoleucine
GGA Glycine
UAA STOP (Translation stops here)

Final Protein Sequence (Polypeptide Chain):

Methionine - Arginine - Tyrosine - Glycine - Cysteine - Leucine - Lysine - Alanine - Tyrosine - Arginine -
Isoleucine - Glycine

Since UAA is a stop codon, translation stops at that point.
