15 Negative Numbers
15.1 Addition and Subtraction
In this section we consider how to add and subtract when working with negative
numbers. This is done using a number line.

To add a positive number, move to the right


on a number line.

To add a negative number, move to the left


on a number line.

Example 1
Calculate:
(a) −3 + 8 (b) 4 + ( − 2)
(c) −8 + 5 (d) − 1 + ( − 3)

Solution
(a) −3 + 8

Start at − 3 and move 8 to the right:

So, − 3 + 8 = 5 .

(b) 4 + ( − 2)

Start at 4 and move 2 to the left:

Start at −8 and move 5 to the right:

Subtraction is the inverse (or opposite) of addition, so

To subtract a positive number, move to the left


on a number line.

To subtract a negative number, move to the right


on a number line.

(c) 4 − ( − 2) (d) − 5 − ( − 3)

(a) 5−7
Start at 5 and move 7 to the left:

15.2 Multiplication and Division


In this section we look at how to multiply and divide negative numbers.

Example 1
(a) Calculate
( − 2) + ( − 2) + ( − 2) + ( − 2) + ( − 2) .
(b) Fill in the missing numbers:
( − 2) + ( − 2) + ( − 2) + ( − 2) + ( − 2) = . . . . . × ( − 2) = . . . . .

Solution
(a) (− 2) + (− 2) + (− 2) + (− 2) + (− 2) = − 10
(b) (− 2) + (− 2) + (− 2) + (− 2) + (− 2) = 5 × (− 2) = − 10

In Example 1 we see that


a positive number multiplied by
a negative number gives a negative answer.
This table shows what happens to the sign of the answer
when positive and negative numbers are multiplied:

The same table can be used for division of positive and


negative numbers.

Example 2
Work out the following:
(a) 5 × ( − 7) (b) (− 8) × (− 10)
(c) (− 42) ÷ 6 (d) (− 88) ÷ (− 8)

Solution
(a) First calculate 5 × 7 = 35 .
As a positive number is multiplied by a negative number, the answer will be
negative:
5 × ( − 7) = − 35

(b) First calculate 8 × 10 = 80 .


Here a negative number is multiplied by a negative number, so the answer
will be positive:
(− 8) × (− 10) = 80
(c) First calculate 42 ÷ 6 = 7 .
As a negative number is divided by a positive number, the answer will be
negative:
(− 42) ÷ 6 = − 7

(c) First calculate 88 ÷ 8 = 11 .


As a negative number is divided by a negative number, the answer will be
positive:
(− 88) ÷ (− 8) = 11
