RC Barrier Yield Line Design Calcs

The document outlines the design of precast concrete barriers using Yield Line Analysis to ensure compliance with AS5100.1 Clause 10.4(c). It details the calculations for barrier capacity under different failure modes, with specific focus on impact loads and the resulting transverse resistance. Three failure modes are analyzed, with Mode 2 yielding the lowest resistance capacity of 745 kN.

Design by Yield Line Analysis (Precast concrete barriers demonstration of compliance with
AS5100.1 Clause 10.4(c))*

For impacts at end of wall or at joints, the barrier capacity is;

( )( )
2
2 M L
Rw = M b + M w + c c , where
2 L c −Lt H

2 √ 2
L =( ) + ( ) +
2
L tL H(M +M )
t b w
c
M c

Where;
H = height of wall (mm)
Lc = critical length of yield line failure pattern (mm)
Lt = longitudinal length of distribution of impact force Ft (mm)
Rw = total transverse resistance of the railing (N)
Mb = flexural resistance of beam in addition to Mw, if any, at top of wall (Nmm)
Mc = flexural resistance of cantilevered walls about an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the
bridge (Nmm/mm)
Mw = flexural resistance of the wall about its vertical axis (Nmm)

Where,
H = 1100mm
Lt = 2400mm
Mb = 0
Mc = 2.4x105 Nmm/mm
Mw = 5.73x107 Nmm

Note: For all failure mechanisms, the plastic collapse mechanism associated with “impact within a wall
segment” is taken as the length of segments on which the collision loads apply. The yield lines
include;

1. Yield line along the base

2. Yield line formed for an end panel

Note that three modes – combinations of load and panel interaction are prescribed. Mode 2 gives the
lowest result of 745kN.

Failure Mode 1

Failure mode 1 consists of the 500kN load over 2.4m striking centrally over a joint. This failure
mechanism includes 250kN over two end panels.

For impacts at end of wall or at joints

( ) √( 1100 ( 0+1.24 x 10 )
)
2 8
1200 1200
Lc = + + 5
2 2 2.4 x 10
Lc =1396.3 mm

Note: Since Lc is less than the panel length (2000mm nom), this plastic collapse mechanism is
possible. Therefore,

( )( )
5 2
2 8 2.4 x 10 x 1396.3
Rw = 0+1.24 x 10 +
2 x 1396.3−1200 1100
Rw =583.9 kN

Therefore, this failure mode has a capacity of

Rw =2 x 583.9=1167.8 kN
Failure Mode 2

Failure mode 2 consists of the 500kN load over 2.4m with the edge of the load at a joint location. This
arrangement engages two panels.

Lc = + +
2 2 2.4 x 105
Lc =760.5 mm

Note: Since Lc is less than the panel length (2000mm nom), this plastic collapse mechanism is
possible. Therefore,

( )( )
5 2
2 8 2.4 x 10 x 760.5
Rw = 0+1.24 x 10 +
2 x 760.5−400 1100
Rw =318 kN

Therefore, this failure mode has a capacity of

Rw =436+318=754 kN
Failure Mode 3

Failure mode 2 consists of the 500kN load over 2.4m with crossing three panels. This arrangement
engages three panels.

Lc = + +
2 2 2.4 x 105
Lc =633 mm

Note: Since Lc is less than the panel length (2000mm nom), this plastic collapse mechanism is
possible. Therefore,

( )( )
5 2
2 8 2.4 x 10 x 633
Rw = 0+ 1.24 x 10 +
2 x 633−200 1100
Rw =264.7 kN

Therefore, this failure mode has a capacity of

Rw =436+2 x 264.7=965.8 kN
