Group Activity: "Decimal Place Value Relay" (10 minutes)

Objective:

 To engage students in practicing place values and the value of digits in

decimal numbers through a fun, interactive relay race.

Materials Needed:

 Whiteboard markers

 Large place value charts (one for each group, or drawn on the board)

 Decimal number cards (with numbers like 3.25, 5.74, 6.19, 8.82, etc.)

 Stopwatch or timer

Activity Steps:

1. Divide the Class into Small Groups (4-5 students per group):

o Each group will need a whiteboard and marker, or you can give
them a large piece of chart paper to write on.

o Each group gets a set of decimal number cards.

2. Explain the Task:

o Each group must work together to identify the place value and
the value of each digit in the decimal numbers presented to
them.

o The first student from each group will draw a decimal number
from the set of cards and write it on the group's whiteboard or
chart paper.

o The group will then take turns identifying the place value of each
digit and writing the value of the digit next to the number. For
example, for 3.25:

 3 is in the ones place (value = 3)

 2 is in the tenths place (value = 0.2)

 5 is in the hundredths place (value = 0.05)

3. Relay Race Format:

o Start the timer for 2 minutes.

o The first student from each group will pick a card and write down
the place value and value of the digits on the board.

o Then, they pass the marker to the next student in the group, who
picks the next card from the set and does the same.

o Continue until each group has gone through all their cards.

4. Teamwork and Collaboration:

o Encourage students to work together to check each other's work.

o They can help each other if they’re unsure of the place value or
value of a digit.

5. Winning Group:

o The group that finishes the task correctly first wins. But, if a
group makes a mistake, they must go back and correct it before
proceeding.

6. Review:

o After the activity, ask each group to share one of their decimal
numbers and explain how they determined the place value and
value of each digit.

o Discuss any errors or challenges the groups faced and clarify any
misunderstandings.

Benefits of the Group Activity:

 Collaboration: Students work together, helping each other

understand the concepts of place value and value of digits.

 Active Learning: By physically engaging in the activity, students

reinforce their understanding through teamwork.

 Motivation: The relay race format adds excitement and competition,

making the lesson more interactive and enjoyable.
Lesson Plan: Giving the Place Value and the Value of a Digit of a
Given Decimal Number Through Hundredths

Grade Level: 4
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Place Value and Value of a Digit of Decimal Numbers Through
Hundredths
Duration: 1 Hour
Materials Needed:

 Whiteboard and markers

 Place value chart (printed or drawn on the board)

 Decimal number cards (with decimal numbers written on them)

 Math worksheets

 Visual aids (number line, place value blocks)

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. Identify the place value of digits in decimal numbers up to the

hundredths place.

2. Determine the value of a digit in a given decimal number.

3. Understand and explain the relationship between the digits in a

decimal number and their corresponding place values.

Lesson Outline:

1. Introduction (10 minutes)

 Hook: Start the lesson with a real-world example: "If you have $3.75,
how much do you have in dollars and cents?"

 Discussion: Explain that decimals are used to represent parts of a

whole. The digit after the decimal point represents the part of a whole,
such as tenths and hundredths.

Key Terms to Introduce:

o Decimal Point

o Tenths

o Hundredths

o Place Value

2. Direct Instruction (15 minutes)

 Introduce the Decimal System:

Draw a place value chart on the whiteboard:
 | Hundreds | Tens | Ones | . | Tenths | Hundredths |

o Explain that to the left of the decimal point are the whole
numbers (hundreds, tens, ones).

o To the right of the decimal point, we have decimal places: tenths

(1/10) and hundredths (1/100).

o For example, in the number 3.75, the 3 is in the ones place, the
7 is in the tenths place, and the 5 is in the hundredths place.

 Value of a Digit:

o Example 1: In 4.56, the value of 5 is 5 tenths (0.5), and the

value of 6 is 6 hundredths (0.06).

o Example 2: In 9.38, the value of 9 is 9 ones (9), the value of 3

is 3 tenths (0.3), and the value of 8 is 8 hundredths (0.08).

3. Guided Practice (15 minutes)

 Interactive Activity:
Distribute decimal number cards to students (e.g., 2.47, 5.39, 1.08,
7.63).

o Have students read the number aloud and identify the place
value of each digit.

o Ask students to write down the value of each digit in the number.

 For example, for 5.39:

 5 is in the ones place, so the value is 5.

 3 is in the tenths place, so the value is 0.3.

 9 is in the hundredths place, so the value is 0.09.

 Provide Support: Walk around the room and assist students as

needed.

4. Independent Practice (10 minutes)

 Worksheet:
Give each student a worksheet that includes several decimal numbers.
Have them identify the place value and the value of each digit.
Example Problems:

1. What is the place value of 6 in 3.46?

2. What is the value of the 3 in 7.53?

3. What is the place value of 8 in 4.85?

 Math Centers (Optional): Set up small groups of students working

with place value blocks or a number line to further practice identifying
and visualizing place values of decimals.

5. Closure (5 minutes)
 Review: Quickly go over the key points from the lesson:

o The place value of a digit tells us what power of 10 the digit

represents.

o The value of a digit is determined by multiplying the digit by its

place value.

 Exit Ticket: Have each student write down a decimal number and
identify the place value and the value of each digit (e.g., for 3.42:
place values of 3, 4, and 2; values of 3, 0.4, and 0.02).

6. Assessment:

 Observe students during guided and independent practice.

 Review students' worksheets and exit tickets for understanding.

 Provide additional practice for students who struggle with identifying

place values or determining the value of digits.

Differentiation:

 For Advanced Learners: Provide more complex decimal numbers

(e.g., 12.876) and challenge students to identify values beyond the
hundredths.

 For Struggling Learners: Use visual aids such as place value charts
and number lines to help them understand the concept of place value.
Offer additional one-on-one support if needed.

Extension Activity (Optional):

 Decimals in Money: Create a mock store where students use decimal

numbers to purchase items. They will identify the place value and
value of each digit in the prices.

Reflection:

After the lesson, reflect on student performance. Were students able to

identify place values and the value of digits with ease? Were there any
misconceptions? Adjust future lessons as needed based on student feedback
and understanding.

This lesson plan will help students understand the concept of place value and
value of digits in decimal numbers up to the hundredths, making sure they
gain a solid foundation in working with decimals!
